Why does my cat try to cover up her food?

I think she's got something backwards because she rarely covers up anything in her litterbox.

By the way, she likes the food that she covers up. If she doesn't like something she just won't eat it, and whines at me to give her something else.

Thanks for any theories!

It is just a typical cat behavior, instinct to survive. Bury the food, bury it deep for survival and also to keep others from scenting it and stealing it. Take a wide bandana, put it down under the food bowl, she eats, scoops her paws, the bandana covers the food, she can't smell the food anymore, and leaves satisfied, comes back later, scoops the bandana off the food, eats, and covers it again. No muss no fuss

my cats normally do that when they don't like the food
I always figured they were trying to get rid of the smell.

One of my cats does that too. I associate it also with something he doesn't like-namely when the place mats that the food dishes are on need to be rinsed off. Usually, when I've just washed them, he never tries to cover up his food.

Both my kitties do that when they're done with what they're eating. They don't usually do it with their dry food tho. Even when they've finished licking a bowl after I've had ice cream or something, they'll cover it up! It forces me to keep things picked up right away! :tounge2:

Midnight doesn't like canned cat food. Years ago, when he was my only cat, I bought some for him to try. He intially tried to bury it, but then decided that it was more fun to use the food dish as a hockey puck, batting it around the kitchen floor!

I got the hint and gave him a bowl of dry...
