For the last few years musicals have been on Hollywood's brain. Chicago sort of restarted the whole genera by having an epic play translate well into an epic film. Now we are presented with films like Across the Universe. Being that I am a fan of musicals, the Beatles, and off beat films I was looking forward to this one. However, it just didn't live up to my expiations. This film is shot as a music video, and because of that two hours just doesn't work. Let me put it this way. Did you like the 1990's Nine Inch Nails videos? Yes? Great. How about we make a full length film out of them. Oh. Right. That would be a bit much.

Second, CGI is a privilege not a necessity. Also, if one is going to cram a film full of it at least make it good looking CGI. I swear there was a whole sequence that looked like an animation student's demo tape.

Third, if one is going to take every 1960's famous person and make them into a character don't use Bono. As much as I LOVE U2 Bono isn't a good actor. In fact, every film he's been in previous to this has had issues. The man is cursed when it comes to being in movies. He should really stick to saving Africa, playing music, and touring with the best band out since The Beatles.

Lastly, if it's a love story then please make it straight forward. I got lost half way though attempting to ignore the bad CGI, Bono, and looking at my watch.

As a side note, this film introduces a random famous person, Salma Hayek, and then has her shot up like some sort of illegal drug. If a movie is going to do this it's going to need to explain it self.

I realize I'm being picky, but if you really want a good musical rent Once (2006). http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0907657/
It was just so much better, and didn't depend on any of the above.

As a side note this movie is rated PG-13. I'm not one to complain about the movie rating system in my country, in fact, I feel a film is given an R (Restricted) rating a little too often. However, the rating board really missed the mark on this film. Just because it's a musical containing Beatles music doesn't mean it's a family film. It's far from. Please use good judgement if you are going to show this movie to anyone under the age of 16. The themes just don't translate to a younger crowd.
