Destiny is the only goat I have without horns. She is a long story. My friend’s mom gave her to me b/c she was sick. When I got her she had been in a Coma for a month. The only life she had was the slight twitch of her eye. My friend’s mom just couldn’t say goodbye. And she knew if I had to make the choice I could do it.

This was her. Anyone who knows goats knows this is not good

After research I diagnosed her with Polioencephalomalacia.. I later had my vet confirm it. It’s not fairly common. In fact my friends vet diagnosed her with Rabies. So as you can guess you have to have seen it to know it.
Anyways He said it was too late to do anything.

I began giving her large doses of Vit B complex and a wide variety of other vitamins. And I would spend hours sitting by her and just reading books. (We had to tube her food and water)

Well slowly I mean slowly. She began to show more signs of life. We got her up into a sling to help her regain circulation and we massaged her legs

.

Her neck was really kinked.

Then one day she stood with a lil support(my mom and cousin)

Then she began small steps until finally she could walk on her own. Mostly in circles though.

She was very shaky and the slightest bump would set her sprawling.

Zoey became her best friend

(Her kink)

Today she is practically normal..Just recently her neck has straightened the only thing wrong is that her jaw is crooked.

She is really attached to me. Mom says its b/c when she was in her coma I would read her books. I would sit of hours reading to her. She is my baby.

She was my third unwalking baby. My first was a lil Lamb called Flicka. Sadly I had to have my vet put her down.

The other was a baby goat Called Abby (Abbys namesake) She was blind and had naval Ill and couldnt walk.

They both were given to me.. In hoped I would get them well. But I just couldnt. We miss them both.

Awwww...what a lovely rescue!!! She definitely made a miraculous recovery when compared to that first photo!!!

As far as her illness, also commonly referred to has "Goat Polio", or Star gazing disease (due to the early symptoms of turning in circles with their heads turned skyward...) it is not as uncommon as one would think; virtually any type of stress on a young goat can bring it on. This is not a common illness in adults...but there is an illness with very similar symptoms called Listeriosis that afflicts mainly adult goats.

When in doubt a goat owner can treat for both illnesses as the treatments are only different in one aspect...Penicillin. Even if a goat doesn't have polio (has Listeriosis) the high dosages of Thiamine are recommended. With goat polio Thiamine is ESSENTIAL to the animals recovery!

Here is a really good site that covers both...

thats the website I found! that how I figured it out. I guess I meant common for our local vets. Destiny just turned a year in January
We had to do the high doses of Vit B complex (the Thiamine in it) b/c the vet that confirmed it didnt have thiamine ans ensured us she would die. and the "goat" Vet wouldnt agree with us that it was polio. She was set on Rabies. SO she wouldnt give us the thiamine. Its really hard to find Livestock Vets. Here In Mo we need them! I am going to be going to college for Vet Meds. But I am going to Major in Livestock and Wildlife (being a Rehabber I would find this helpful since we dont have a vet that know how to treat wild babys/ adults. )

Unfortunately not alot of vets are extremely knowledgeable on goats and illnesses in goats...I had to learn alot on my own, as well as from fellow breeders; I did have a vet that was willing to learn about them which was wonderful; so we were always able to combine our 'knowledge' and figure out what was wrong...A vet like that is invaluable!!! She now has another vet partner that specializes in goats, and livestock...but I haven't met her at all.

We are going through this now with our goat 'Mama'. I am hoping she pulls through but it is hard as we both must work in the day. Any advice you can share would be much appreciated. We have been giving her B12 and feeding her liquids via a syringe. Tomorrow I will build her a sling. She is hanging in there but cries a lot when we try to sit her up...her neck is twisted and her eyes are foggy.

Thanks for giving us hope.
