Serbia Withdrawals Ambassador From US

Serbia has recalled its ambassador from Washington in protest at US recognition of Kosovo's independence, saying the US has "violated international law".
Story: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7251802.stm

I'm sure that we are all aware that Kosovo has declared itself an independent state and has received support and recognition from the EU and United States for doing so. My concern is that this will destabilize what has been a tenuous peace since the cease fire that has been enforced by a continuous NATO presence. I know the British have 4,000 troops on standby for rapid deployment to Kosovo.
Anyone worried that the Balkans could once plunge into war over this?

i doubt very little. If i remember reading right, Russia is also backing Kosovo.

I believe that Russia is backing Serbia, China has also expressed opposition to this move by Kosovo.

For now, Serbia is saying that they won't respond with force. I hope it stays that way.

I know hte region well, having worked in Bosnia for almost 10 years, and visited Kosovo often. Over there, we always said Kosovo is the most dangerous region in the Balkans and has already been the flashpoint for other conflicts. I am terrified of what might happen, seeing the Kosovan Serb reactions on TV last night. Serbia may not do anything yet, but if violence really erupts again between the Serbs and the Albanians in Kosovo, then they might try some kind of 'rescue' or intervention to save their people. ANd Lord only knows what that would lead to internationally.

I thought so.

My thoughts and prayers are for cooler heads prevailing.

Yeah I worry about war breaking out there too. If war does break out, it's a civil war and other countries really need to stay out.

I believe one of the reasons NATO intervened during the last Kosovo-Serbia War was because of the campaign of ethnic cleansing that was going on. I understand the cultural significance that the province has to the Serbs (the province has been governed by the UN since the war ended) but if war does break out I don't see NATO sitting idly by due to what occurred in the last war. The vast majority of the population of Kosovo is Albanian, they should have their own state.

Didn't the Serbians under that Milosovitch (sp) guy massacre tens of thousands of people? Are we REALLY saying that if that happens again we should stay out of it? Ethnic cleansing is a terrible thing.

I agree with you, but i have to say being from the Blakans (Bosnia) i think war can be very likely in the future...regardless of Kosovo or not. i think if the peace troops leave there might be war again. I pray that this doesnt happen as war is NASTY and so many people have already lost their lives. I go to Bosnia every summer and we have come a long way since the war stopped.....

I couldn't agree with you more. My opinion is that the major reason the fighting hasn't continued is because of the ongoing presence of KFOR.

Dina, does the US still have a troops in Kosovo or has the operation become a wholly European mission? I couldn't find anything on US troops being rotated since 2004 or 2005. My old division was there in 2003 before deploying to Iraq.
