My kitten does have herpes virus! So far we just pay attention to stressful situations and that is when the llysine comes out! Meowmy takes it as well for oral herpes!

I just posted that we got our cat Icarus back after he was stolen 3.5 months ago. His back left leg is fractured so we got the following costs:

Exam - 48
14 hours hospitalization - 168
Inj Buprenex - 41
Fluids Small - 35
X-ray - 176
Buretrol - 33
X ray each additional view - 132
CBC - 48
Chemistry Panel - 110
Urinalysis - 61
Surgeon Exam - 97
I left some things out but for him to stay overnight and have some tests run for surgery tomorrow the cost was $1248.00

Now for surgery:
Post Surgical Care 26 hours - 1149
Epidural - 95
Fentanyl Patch 71
X-ray - 132
Anesthesia 30 min - 132
Surgery - 350
Anesthesia additional 30 min 192
Anestisit - 112
Anesthesia monitoring equipment - 35
Surgery Room Fee - 54
Surgical package - 54
Surgical Supplies - 132
Thermacare heat - 50
Implant fee - 600
RX Med - 62
Total for Surgery - $3465 not including overnight stay listed above.

We found a vet we are taking him to tomorrow (we don't have a quote) who said over the phone the cost would be between $1800 and $2500 so we are going there instead of the place who quoted us the above price.

The cost of caring for a dog from puppy through adulthood is much greater than that of a cat, and that cost rises exponentially with the size of the dog. (Purchase price, food, shots, flea/tick & heartworm prevention, chew toys, treats, training, spay/neuter, etc) The cost of cat maintenance tends to catch up during the geriatric years because cats, generally, have more of them.

I've found that the dogs to be more expensive maintenance-wise, but Kiwi is quickly catching up to that.

Milo has probably cost me maybe $1000 his whole life in vet bills so far (he's 5), Kiwi cost around $2700 in a matter of 4-5 days.

health problems can crop up with any animal, cat, dog, horse, rabbit, whatever, Accidents and illnesses happen sometimes. Best thing is to be prepared.

Here is my vet's price list.
http://www.valuepetclinic.com/id11.html

Last fall, I called around many vets near me for Spay & Neuter pricing.
Prices ranges were drastically different.
One place I called told me in order for me to bring my cats, they must have proof of vaccination or have to have their vaccination package. Also, females needed to stay overnight.
Price for procedure was pretty expensive.

This place I chose, I was just taking them for initial consultation + vaccine, then vet did fix all at once.
I told them I fed them in the morning, bug vet said they have different kind of anesthetic for that.
I was just stunned it was that easy.
I left them there in the morning, and they were all ready to go home by 2PM.

So, I've got 10 in the house....3 are fosters, 1 is looking for a furr-ever home, one is going back outside to be a farm kitty (his choice). I've got lots of cat tress, toys, furniture to scale, etc. Yes, they fight....but most of the fights are Ophelia's doing & she's kinda evil.
My house is like a revolving door......I take the ones no one else will. Squishy was going to be euthanized in 12 hours if I didn't take him...my two foster kittens would've died from URIs.....Bea, well....she didn't stand a chance.

I remember spays being $150 and neuters being $90 at one of the places around here. Not awfully expensive for major surgery, if you ask me.

It would have cost like $1100 to have Raph's teeth (all but 6 of them) taken out and the first round of treatments for the chronic periodontitis. I paid $74 because of his health contract at TH...which has wonderful capabilities to help adopters out with costs when they're willing to take on a cat with as many special needs as Raphie has (IBD, periodontal disease, was treated with radioactive iodine for hyperthyroid, is 10 now, bites and attacks and doesn't tolerate restrain, and an inner ear problem that causes severe motion sickness. All in one cat. Whom I love.)

I thought this would be more, but last week when I took Raven and Jack to the vet they both got thorough exams and Raven got her rabies shot and distemper and Jack just got distemper and the total was like $88.

Maybe its because I'm a...

I wish I lived in America sometimes!
I think s/n was about $250 for the girl, and $150 for the boy
When Tilly broke her leg total treatment- plate, operation, 3 sets of x-rays, medicine, week long stay in the vets office, etc cost $8000!!!
Admittedly it was quite a bad break, and she escaped afterwards, got cold and needed paw massages to restore the circulation along with a hefty dose of antibiotics.
Thank god for insurance!

Wow, what a difference location makes!

In Ontario I pay about $50-60 for an office visit only.
A FIV/FeLV test ranges from $50 to $100, depending on the vet.
A visit to an emergency clinic is about $90 just to get in the door.
I paid $250 to have Oliver's teeth cleaned 2 years ago which included anesthetic and an overnight stay (and one heck of a great breakfast, I hope, for that price!!)

My vet gives me a 10% discount if I bring in 2 critters at a time (I'm hoping now that I have three cats it will be 20%--maybe if I get enough of them it will be free !!

Check up: $45.00
Urine test: $55.00 or maybe it was $65.00
Spay: $90, neuter $60 (luckily both mine were fixed by the shelter!)
Rabies Shot: $30 something.

I realize the price is a bit steep, but I love my vet. =) and luckily, I haven't had to pay for much more *knock on wood*. And, since I've been going there since I adopted cats, and my mom has taken all her pets there for 20 years, they give me breaks. Like, when Shermie needed his rabies shot and had just been in for a check up a week before, they charged me like $10 bucks for a mini-check up instead of the standard $45. And they give lollypops!
