Hi, I need some information on eye discharge. My sons calico has a dark crust that forms at the corner of the eyes. It is just a little, but I wanted to know if anyone else has this problem, and if it is normal or not??? Thanks

Hi sbd45,

I have a simular problem with my kitty. I would get your vet take a look at your kitty's eyes. They are couple of reasons why your kitty's eyes is discharging,it could be from infection to cloged tear ducts. Your vet will provide you with a better diagnosis.

Best of luck!

When we wake up in the morning, we wipe the sleep out of our eyes! It is just tears that have dried up in the corner of our eyes. The same goes for cats. Unless there is lot's of discharge, I wouldn't worry to much! All of my kitties have a little bit of crust when they wake up, I just wipe it off with a damp cotton swab.

Another possibility is that he has allergies and it's making his eyes water. My cat has allergies and he gets gunk in his eyes sometimes. I just use a baby wipe to clean his face and all is well.
I also have to clean a lot so dust isn't bothering him. Meh.

I have to do the same for Miss Kitty. The first few months I got her I had to do it more often, but lately it's only once every week or two when I actually get something out when I wipe.

It is pretty adorable, though. At first, of course, she hated someone poking their finger in her eye. However, after she realized what I was doing, now she lets me do one eye, and then turns her head so I can do the other! It's really quite funny how quickly she "got it" and she obviously likes it when I do it.

I've talked to the vet - they say it was likely just "cradle crud" or what have you she got at the shelter, and as long as it's not colored or wet it's not something that needs to be treated. It's just a little bit of black crust, I use my finger and a tissue to get it out.

Good luck!
