Toledo, OH mayor calls off Marine training exercises in downtown area.

Since the Marines had done this before, the police knew, and the media had been told, it sounds like the Mayor hadn't been notified and he had his nose bent out of shape because someone had forgot to tell him. He just reacted in an immature way by saying you can't do this because nobody told me about it.

I agree. Hopefully, he'll let them reschedule it or another community step up to help the Marines so they can get this training in.

I am going to have to side with the mayor on this one. The reason is the fact the marine would fight mock battles with blank ammunition. I couldn't even imagine that happening in my town even if I knew it was just an excercise. And the mayor did give them an alternative location in an abandoned school. I live in an area where I have seen military personel with thier M-16 patroling and it is emotionally hard. During the DC sniper time here I walked out my house to be stopped by camaflouged men with M-16 on every corner. During terror alerts they are on the metro. For me, it doesn't reasure me it shows how crazy this world is. I know they need to practice and I know there is a need for these excercises. Aren't there mock towns somewhere they can do that and not a live downtown area. I just couldn't imagine walking down 14th street in DC and hearing gunfire in the distance.

There are mock towns on some military bases that are used for MOUT training but there may not have been one close enough by to facilitate weekend drill for these Marines. The closest Army base to probably offer it would more than likely be Fort Campbell but that is all of the way down in the southern part of Kentucky close to the Tennessee border and these guys are reservists, which means they would be back at their regular jobs on Monday. Time-wise it probably wasn't feasible to travel to a base.

I do understand your point, though. The majority of civilians have never seen a live person walking around carrying an automatic weapon, much less heard automatic weapons fire. I can see how they would be a little unnerved by it.

Good.... they shouldn't be using cities or towns for training in the first place. The Army used Morgantown (where WVU is) as a training site.... during finals!! It made studying and take finals that much harder. Plus we were told to "not resist" if they came busting threw our door. What the heck is up with that!!

The poor Marines, they just can't seem to catch a break lately. All they want to do is protect us and people just don't want to be protected I guess.
Sad.

how sad is that.
i dont see why, we should not be allowed to carry full auto hardware around.
would be far less crime that way.

The closest I've come to this is when the film crews are allowed to take over certain blocks to film live-action sequences with mock gun shots, police cars, officers, etc.

Even that has been know to make children cry and drive everyone else bonkers.

I'm not much of a fan of full auto, it's overrated.

In all seriousness I prefer the M14 over the M16.

I'm not all that thrilled with the Mayor's decision considering the Marines have trained there like this before. I think it would be a good idea if the military, the DoD and individual states got together to build a mock town in every state for use by the Guard and Reserves so they can get specialized training like this accomplished. It's important that they do.

The fact they had done it before and the way it was stopped is what makes it seem like the mayor just was reacting to someone forgetting to tell him. I don't know about Toledo but I know most of downtown Columbus is like a deserted ghost town on the weekends. It's all Monday thru Friday office buildings. There used to be some shopping but it has all closed down. There is a Catholic cathedral that has masses Saturday evening and Sunday but it isn't right downtown and would be easily avoided and they could suspend the noise during mass times. I bet downtown Toledo is the same way.

Send them to us, I am sure Jacksonville is used to it by now. We spend a lot of time with our buildings shaking. We are right outside of Camp LeJuene, New River Air Station, and Camp Johnson. We love our Marines, and generally do what we can to accommodate them. Our downtown area is small, though, it may not be big enough for their purposes.
