that one staring at you doesn't look happy for the interruption!

Do they raise the buffalo for meat at this farm?

awww but they look so cuddly, i wanted to pet one but i doubt if its allowed. Those things can and will kill you quick like. A friend of the family raised one from a calf and it killed him, he went to feed him and it gored and killed him. I doubt it meant to though, probably was playing and didnt realize its own size.

ummm i am not sure about this place, but there are some around that do raise them for meat, alot around here are just trying to bring back the buffalo population again. They are truly beautiful animals, i would love to eventually see more of them around. I really like the other place we often visit because they are free range so they can travel for miles without fences and pens. But its a little harder to get closeup picts there. alot of the ones that raise them for meat crossbread them with cattle. Its called Beefalo meat, not quite as healthy as pure buffalo but its a cheaper way to go for the ranchers.

I always try to imagine what the prairies were like at one time, with hundreds of thousands of bison roaming about. It must have been an awe-inspiring sight. They are beautiful, intelligent animals
Thanks for the photos!

No kidding!!!!

Do you know if these are buffalo or bison??? My step dad and I were in an arguement for the longest time.....he said the bison in the us were buffalo and I said they were bison, no buffalo run free in the US anymore.
We were in South Dakota. I was right!!! Na-na-na-na-na!! Aparently all the buffalo were killed off and now we have bison. Of course there are the farmers like the one you visited! That's really cool!!!

Here is the explanation

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Bison

Basically, American Bison are the animals that have been here for around 10,000 years and were almost hunted to extinction. Buffalo are kind of a cousin and live in Africa, I believe.
I heard we had buffalo at one point. Do you know if that is true? I'm sure it could be considering we had that "ice bridge" between russia and north america.

Is it a cultural reason we call them buffalo? I'm confused as to why bison are called that. I've seen a stuffed bison and buffalo and they are very simular, I'm guessing that has something to do with it as well.....

All I keep thinking through this entire thread is of a childhood book entitled "Buffalo Don't Wear Underwear".
