I haven't been feeling well the last few days and I missed going to the gym yesterday because my chest was feeling tight (asthma) and my stomach was upset.

I decided to go to the gym today. I wasn't feeling 100% but since the next day i can go is Friday, I felt I needed to go today. And I felt well enough at the time that I felt I would be able to at least manage a lower paced work out.

Handi Transit picked me up at 6am and I was there by 6:30am. I did my stretches and got on a treadmill at around 7am. I only managed to do 15 minutes because I was feeling sick to my stomach and short of breath. I decided to try the arm bike and only managed 10 minutes of that before I thought I was going to throw up.

Now my dilemma. Here I was at the gym at 7:30am and my return ride is not going to be picking me up until 11:30am. The way I was feeling there was no way I could continue to work out and the idea of sitting around there for 5 hours waiting was not something I felt I could do the way I was feeling, so I made the decision to take a cab home.

That cab ride cost me $23.50
To top it off I felt so ill by the time I got home the only thing on my mind was to get into my bed. I completely forgot to call Handi Transit to cancel my return ride home. So now I have a "no show" on my record and I have to pay them $4.50 as a penalty. Not a good thing when you are on a very tight budget with no room for such expenses.

That's terrible - all because you needed a ride; I find that heartbreaking cuz it seems like someone from the gym should've given you one

I can commiserate, though, I used to have to walk with my youngest daughter on my back in the ski town where we lived cuz she has brain damage & as a result, her bad balance plus her lack of muscle tone made it very dangerous to walk on snow & ice. So I vowed then that when I could affort a car, I would give other people rides. It feels so good to help out

Sending you lots of prayers and vibes for healing
And kudos for getting in some excercise, despite being ill - what a real trooper

Oh no! That really stinks! Cabs can be quite expensive I hear! Too bad you don't live in Iowa City! They have a free bus system! It's so nice, I don't have to pay to park every hour that way!

I'm not able to take a regular public transportation system right now due to my medical issues. I have fainting episodes so I use "Handi Transit" which is a door to door public transportation for people with medical issues that prevent them from using the regular transit system. You have to be referred by a doctor to use Handi Transit and they have to approve the application. Each trip I take via that service is $1.95 and they pick me up at my front door and drop me off at the front door of my destination. I have to call them 48 hours in advance to arrange each pick up and return trip and call the day before to confirm.

Even if I was able to take a regular bus today, there was no way that I could. I was feeling short of breath and my stomach was very upset and I felt like I was going to throw up. The gym is all the way across town and it would have taken me probably 2 hours to get home by bus with wait times (in sub zero weather) and I think 3 bus transfers plus a 2 block walk from the bus to my apartment.

Unfortunately my only choices were to wait at the gym for 5 hours, or take a cab home. I was feeling so ill that I opted for the cab home. I'm thankful that it's a short month this month so I should be able to just manage to get through to the end of the month provided nothing major happens.

I'm so sorry that it was such a bad day.
Maybe if you talk to them about the being sick issue, they won't charge you for the Handi Transit ride. that you feel better.
