IMO vs. Breaking Mews (post spliced from another thread)

Breaking Mews is actually for links to news stories which don't leave much room for debate. IMO is still the place to post on controversial issues.

I don't see this topic as controversial at all, I see it as a harsh reality that all too many humans are in denial about.

ETA: The topic referred to here is global warning; these posts were taken from that thread. jcat

Oh, well, Bruce is controversial all by himself. *ducks*

REgarding the news links things, that DOES make sense to me, but if a debate starts on a posted link thread, will it then be moved to IMO?

We're still working on that, but that's the general idea.

I don't get this moving threads around. They are in one place. Then if a debate starts, it gets moved. ???????

See, you are catching on already.

Seriously, there are some news items that just don't need debate such as one I can remember (I believe) about a fellow throwing a cat off a bridge. There is nothing to debate as I believe we would all be in total agreement that it was a despicable deed. That would be the difference IMO at least, or if some predator hurt or killed a child - no debate - just a horrible act.

Now we've hijacked the global warming thread. To illustrate: That very thread was posted in Breaking Mews, but since the opening post didn't include a link to a news article, and I knew from experience that certain of our regular posters think global warming is "bunk", and would be along to argue, I moved it to IMO.

In contrast, Mike's "Beer safety first" thread, which contains a link, is hardly going to induce anybody to argue that it's okay to put a seat belt on your beer, but not your/a child, so I moved that to Breaking Mews".

Then I am surprised they don't get posted in the Cat Lounge. Or, maybe that is a no no? Honestly confused.

Well, let's try to straighten out the confusion. If someone sees a news article and feels we all might like to see it but that may not incur pages of intellectual discussion or difference of opinion, then they could post it in the new forum.

If it's something that would generate different points of view then IMO is where a thread would be posted. As for the Cat Lounge, that's just a great place to hang out and socialize.

Now, if any other mods think I'm way off track in my interpretation, please feel free to clarify because this is my understanding of the new forum (which of course makes sense to me but not necessarily anyone else. )

I don't think there's a ban on posting news in the Lounge, just most people discussing current events tend to be looking in this Lounge?

Ooops. I didn't realize there was a subforum - I thought we were supposed to post in this thread. I was wondering who'd want to wade through it when it's 345 pages long!

Don't be a male chauvinist! Actually, you weren't one of the posters I was thinking of, as you're not dead set on being "contrary", just for the sake of stirring things up. Though I believe many regular IMO posters are tempted to play "devil's advocate" at times.

Theres been threads posted in other forums that start off ok, but then start to go downhill and that's when they've been moved to IMO but you've never noticed

Linda you've explained it perfectly even though it's late here and i'm tired.

PFFFFFT!

I wouldn't have to but he tends to get abuse from time to time for no apparent reason.

BTW, I like the new format. It makes it easier on deciding where to post things...at least for me it does. I can be a little slow sometimes.

Isn't that the truth! The male ego is so fragile and we, as women, are so caring and nurturing that we find it hard to hurt these little fellows, er, I mean men.
