UTI and senior cat

Hello Everyone!

My boy Marty who will be 17 on Feb. 19th and at his yearly check up he was just diag. with a UTI. The culture showed that he has proteus organism. Marty is on Bayril. The vet wants him on it for 2 weeks then a recheck, than a min. of 4 more weeks of the Baytril. To say the least I was shocked when the urinalysis showed bacteria. Marty has been acting fine. I had no idea and I sure do feel bad


Marty does have some kidney issues and is on Science Diet K/D.
How did he get the proteus organism?
Does this mean he has been sick for awhile and I did not know?

With him being so old I tend to watch him careful and wonder if I missed something. He drinks a great deal of water a day, but I thought that was just him. Also, since he lost his brother 14 1/2 months ago he has not been the same. Grumpy, yelling at his brothers "sleeping spots" and yelling at us to cuddle with him.

What did I miss ?

My kitten had a UTI.
My cat was diagnosed with a Parasite. She is a indoor cat. I don't know where it came from.

My almost 16 year old Cat just had a Bladder Infection and she was on Meds for 1.5 Months. She is indoor too. In Aug 2006 she had a Bladder Infection with Ecoli. We could not firgure it out how she got it either. she was on Meds for 2.5 Months. I thought my Cat was Constipated this time until she went pee and then tried to go again. I hope it will be easier to get rid of in your Cat. My Cat is on antibiotics again because now she has a Cold. Her last Urine Test was Neg Jan 11.

I guess that it just happened. And, all that I can do is take care of him.


I am still terrified. His brother (Sebastain) had an illness that would not go away, even with treatment, and in the end I had to put him to rest b/c he was in pain, lost over 2 pounds in 4 weeks, was being force fed for 4 weeks, had a body temp of 96, a white count in the 90's and I there was nothing else to do. I can not bare a repeat of this. My sebastain was acting normal and then BAM within 5 weeks he was gone. I know that every situation is different but Marty being ill and me not knowing is too close for comfort.
