I didnt post this before because i didnt realy feel like talking about it. Thursday the neighbors dog attacked Screach, my old yeller tom cat. Oddly enough this dog has never done this sort of thing before. SHe has always come around and ate with the cats and played with them, but this time she wasnt so friendly. The vet couldnt find anything broken, but i am beginning not to trust him so much because there has to be something seriously wrong, screach can not walk. He told my sister to take him home and keep him in the crate and after a couple of days we would have to decide either to put him to sleep or not, but the chances of him walking again were almost none. He has feeling in his hind legs and can move them, but he dont walk. The first two days he just layed there and meowed, the meowing is nothing new he has always been a talker and still very much is. He eats and drinks and seams to have no problem with that. Saturday night he started really sitting up. So maybe this is progress? I just dont know what to do, i put him in Dixie's large dog crate with a litter box and food and water bowl, i keep it clean and i have taken him out of the crate to see if he would try to stand on the floor but no luck there. I noticed tonight his legs arent as limp as they were and he holds them closer under him when he scoots across the floor in a sitting possition. Everyone says i should just put him down because he will never walk again. I dont see how this is fair, would they want put to sleep if they couldnt walk? I dont know, i guess i am questioning whether i am doing the right thing, he dont seam to be in pain, at least from what i can tell, its not like he is laying there crying or anything, how do i know for sure? I wasnt even here to rescue him when it happened, i was stuck in stw with my bf, and got a phone message that evening after my sister had rescued him and had him taken in and looked at. Does anyone have any experiance with anything like this? Am i letting him suffer or is it right to give him time and see if he will walk again? If he dont walk again is it mean to let him go on like that or ????

I'm surprised that the vet says there is nothing wrong with him, but then also says he will probably not walk again??? So maybe he thinks nothing is broken, but he has neurological damage that he may or may not recover from? Just didn't fully understand....

Did he issue him any pain medications?

IMO, if you are willing to invest the time in him, which you seem to be, as long as he isn't in any dibilitating pain, and seems to be slowly recovering, I'd give him some more time rather then having him PTS. If it were me, I'd schedule an immediate visit to a different vet for a second opinion and x-rays as well. I've made my vet x-ray everything, from a limp to a URI, I don't like taking chances. If that is all the vet told you, it just doesn't sit right.....

Good Luck, keep us updated.

Oh your poor kitty. Is there anyway you could get a second opinion? Perhaps an animal hospital with specialists would be able to run further tests to figure out what is really the source of him not being able to use his legs. Then maybe you would know if something could be done for him. I hope you can get some answers soon and that your Screach can make a full recovery. Sending some vibes your way.

I am so sorry. I think I would talk to another vet. Did the issue with walking start immediately or did it show up later? Is Screach on steroids?

I don't know where you are in OK, but I would think about going to the City, Tulsa or even that town full of ugly-orange-loving people with the great vet school.

ok first of all i would change vets. there is something wrong with your cat, now u just need to know what it is. sounds to me like a nerve got damaged or just pinched. x-rays should be done. i dont know if your vet already did. if u want to long it might not be able to be repaired if at all.
just because a cat cant walk doesnt mean its not a happy cat and i should know. i adopted a cat from the shelter that got ran over by a car and broke her back. she cant use her back legs anymore and has no control over her bladder anymore. this all could of been fixed with a simple surgery if the shelter would of paid for it but they didnt due to low funds. she is a very happy cat with diapers
it doesnt slow her down at all.
no matter what u decide remember one thing its not the cats fault or yours what happened. importent is what u gonna do now. if he can never walk again it might be a little more work for u but he can still have a long and happy life as long as u make sure hes not in pain.
like i said change vets and see what they say. if u want to talk more about that i have msn messanger, yahoo and aim. msn is [email protected]. yahoo is [email protected] and aim [email protected].
just add me and i will answer any questions u have as good as i can or if u just want to talk.

good luck

I agree that there is definitely something wrong, and to get another opinion. I hope that something can be done for your poor baby.

If you can afford it, I also recommend a second opinion, especially since you don't seem to trust the vet. Always go with your gut instinct, if you think something is broken.

However I have been in this situation and nothing was broken it was pure pain causing the reaction.

My three legged RB kitty, Monkey, was outside with me one day when my best friend's son come over with their dog. Well in a blink of an eye the dog pulled the leash out of the young boy's hand and charged my kitty. I couldn't get to the door to open it fast enough.

Monkey ran around the front of the house and tried to climb the big tree. The dog, a wolf husky mix, picked her off the tree and shook her. I grabbed the dog and she dropped Monkey.

I took Monkey straight to the vet, nothing broken. She was horribly bruised though. Back then there were no safe painkillers for cats. I brought Monkey home and she stayed in the dark closet not moving for a week. I brought her food to her and put her in and out of her litter box.
After a week she started to perk up.

This could be the same issue going on with Screach. If he has feeling and can actually move his legs, but is just choosing not too, pain could be the reason.

lots of healing vibes coming your way

I also agree with the second opinion if you can afford it. An x-ray would be able to show if there is any damage to the spine. It could just be inflammation or bruising putting pressure on the nerves, in which case an anti-inflammatory or steroids could help and he would stand a better chance of recovery. It honestly doesn't sound as if your vet has done very much.

If there is a Veterinary school anywhere near you, I would suggest you try to have Screach seen there...these places have specialists and modern imaging equipment - and - difficult/unusual cases are very useful learning experiences for the students.

kittymonsters had some great advice too.....

Sorry to be blunt, but your vet is a moron. Find a new one that knows which way is up! (Trust me, I messed around with Dr. Stupid in town here & it almost cost a kitty her life)

Could be nerve damage?

Just what I was going to say, second vet, give Screach some time, get pain killers from 2nd vet.(You probably know not to give him human meds; they could kill him.) He was probably also in shock at least at the beginning. Poor baby.

If I was beaten up by a bigger person (probably even a smaller person!), I'd probably curl up and not act like myself for a while, too, injuries or not. And any injuries he has, I bet, can be treated and/or worked around. But again, I'd go to a second vet.

It does sound like he's recovering with time. Doesn't sound to me like there's any need right now to put him to sleep.

I think your Vet is a Idiot too. I had a Idiot Vet tell me Coco had Cancer and her heart wasnt good. It was Severe Asthma and her Heart was fine. Good thing is the Vet was shut down. The Vet I go to now is where I went for a 2nd Opinion when Coco was sick 2 years ago. I hope you go to another Vet. Write Catwoman she wi help you aot. I have seen pics of her Cats. She has more then one ike that.
