Hi, I am new to the forum. I guess, I kind of lurked for a while - searching for any kind of information about my cat's behavior...her name is Friday. I wasn't really sure how to title this...

It's really kind of embarrassing - Friday likes her butt patted
. It's mostly around her tail and haunches. We've tried ignoring her pleas for us to indulge her, but she just whines so much, starts nipping and scratching us, and occassionally likes to catch our attention by getting in "trouble" (opening the cupboard door with the china - I have no idea how she knows which one to pick). Can anyone fill me in on what this might really mean? It's so embarrassing when she does it in front of visitors!

Here, have a picture

Hi and welcome to TCS!
Can you give us a little more info about her...How old is she? Is she spayed? Do you have any other cats? If she is spayed, does she seem to clean and/or scratch in this area more so?

She looks so content smothering the person in the picture! Pretty girl!

She is spayed. She was a kitten when we adopted her - so she's about 1 year and maybe 8 or 9 months old. She doesn't clean more than usual - at least in comparison to her sistercat Saturday. The behavior started about six or 7 months ago, before that, she was very calm and never progressed beyond mewing if something was bothering her (i.e. her water bowl is empty). The biting is more like nipping at first; the scratching increases in intensity the more we tell her 'no.'

The picture is actually me holding her during a nap...I love taking pictures of her!

Sounds like shes bored and looking to stir things up a bit! Presenting her "butt" is a normal cat to cat behavior, they smell and rub front to back as a love greeting. Sometimes it stimulates frisky play, rough housing basically. Problem is we don't have the beautiful fur coats as protection and some kitties don't understand the difference between human and cat when we raise them from kittens, we become mom kitty, part of the fur family. You can try some defensive cat gestures if she gets to forward, quick hiss, low grumble or growl. This is an age where they start feeling independent, testing their boundaries, teasing and taunting situations for fun. Extra playtime is recommended and finding sources of self entertainment, kitty condos, window perches are the best!

Thank you so much Cheylink! That puts me at ease a little more - I was starting to feel a little weird giving in to her. I wonder if she will start doing this to her sister?

Some cats (I have a couple) like to be spanked.
Females more than males I understand.
With some, the harder the better.
I only wish I knew what they were thinking....

Here's proof

Both of my boys like it too.
Sho, who is normally a somewhat shy cat will instantly become your best friend if you'll scratch and pat his butt.
...Then he'll hound you all the time. Whenever he jumps in someone's lap he'll actually turn and expect it.

Tomas is a little different, he likes to be patted all over too. I discovered his odd behavior several months ago. I was sitting in the dinning room, fly swatter in hand when he started to try to play with it - I let him. Then jokingly flapped it at his butt (softer plastic swatter)... he loved it and started rolling around. The more I did it the more he would brrr, coo, and roll. Very odd, I've never had him behave that way with anything else.

I think as long as a cat has never been spanked as a punishment they tend not to see that as something bad.
