FundRace 2008

The genie is out of the bottle.

Would you like to know which residents in your community contributed money to a candidate in the US Pres primary?
Would you want to know their name, address, where they work and how much they gave to which candidate?

It's all here...
Check out Huffingtion's FundRace 2008....

http://fundrace.huffingtonpost.com/

I tried it...
I clicked on my state, nearest large city, then found my town, click all around it, got several near by zip codes.....
it names names, addresses, employment and amounts donated and to which candidate.

Part of me thinks that openness in fund raising is a good thing but I would not want my personal info. such as employment or home address so easily accessible to the general public.

Do you think this info. is useful or do you feel it will it deter small donations because of privacy issues?

I don't know about this. Most regular working people who give money to a political campaign only give to the one candidate that they are going to vote for so in a round about way they are violating the secret ballot. It is a matter of public record so no laws are being broken though. I still looked up my community though. Most of the Republican money had gone to Rudy and most of the money to a Democrat candidate went to Obama. I didn't really care for Rudy but I do like Obama. Actually he is the only candidate that I really do like. As is expected in Ohio it was just about a 50/50 split between the two parties.

Personally? I really don't care who or what my neighbors contribute to...if I wanted to find out all I need to do is look on their front lawns for the campaign signs.

I think its a waste of valuable programming code that someone did this.

If you knew that your your name, home address, place of employment, which candidate you contributed to and how much you gave, would be posted publicly ...
do you think that it might stop you from donating?

Yes, if I wanted it public, I'd put a sign on my front lawn!! But I guess it's the only way to keep the campaign contributions legit....as as legit as possible!!

Yes, most definitely. I think this is a terrible intrusion.

This is creepy. The internet can be a wonderful thing, but at the same time it can be extremely invasive. I don't agree with publishing someone's personal information without their express consent.

Many people have no idea how much is automatically uploaded to the WWW.

With how inflammatory politics can be, this information has the potential to put people in danger.

I was impressed by the technology when I first saw it but soon became aware that this easily accessed personal information, might discourage regular people like us, from donating to a candidate that we support.

Absolutely. I do not donate just for that reason.
