It usually takes me a long time to fall asleep...at least 15-20 minutes after I lay down. Sometimes, I have bouts of insomnia, and sometimes I sleep fine...it depends on a whole bunch of factors in my life (routine, stress, diet, things I have coming up, etc).

Have you looked into Valerian or Kava Kava? Also, lavender, chamomille, catnip (yes, even catnip!), teas can help.

I used to, but I cut out almost all caffeine except coffee in the morning, and since then I sleep like a baby. If I drink any caffeine in the evening, even a glass of soda at dinner, I am awake all night. As a general rule I avoid caffeine after 12 noon.

Living in the land of not enough time
Occasionally my brain won't turn off and allow me to sleep. Last night was one of those nights. I finally fell asleep at 4 am to have my alarm go off at 6 am. Normally, a change of scenery helps. Leave the bedroom and go sit in front of the TV. You'll fall asleep quickly. Just don't forget to bring the alarm clock with you.

Far far away!
I seemed to go through a time where I could not sleep but it seemed when I got married I sleep just fine!! But if I ever had a hard time falling asleep it seemed watching tv and relaxing would make me fall asleep. My husband sometimes has a problem with being tired but just laying there wide awake. He says that it is happens usually if he didn't do much during the day. His brain will keep him up. He is a computer programer so he is using his brain all day and that will help him sleep better because not only will he be physically tired at night, his head is very tired too. But on his days off if he doesn't use his brain like that he will go to bed with his body tired but not his brain so he will lay there awake for a long time before he can sleep. He has found if he does something like play a game like Scrabble or something that gets him thinking then that helps out a lot.

Wow, I see that I am not alone with this. Funny, at times when I know I am not going to get much sleep, like tonite, because I am working 3pm-11pm now and have to be back at 7am tomorrow. I will go to bed a have no trouble, but will only get about 4-4 1/2 hours sleep, because I need to get up at 4:30am. But, like the other day, I went to bed early and I knew I could get a good 8 hours. Yeah sure...never happened. I was up until 4am before finally going to sleep
I guess I feel better knowing I am not alone
Hmmm, maybe it is the cats

15-20 minutes is NOT a long time!!! At the moment I turn the lights off and it takes about 2-3 hours to fall asleep! Even when I fall asleep easily it takes 5-10 minutes, which I don't consider a very long time

Have you tried sleeping with a fan on? Usually what causes us to become sleepy while driving is the constant humming that we hear...white noise. Perhaps having a constant noise while you're in bed will help?

It's a long time compared to DH who falls asleep even before his head hits the pillow.

But, I feel for you, my dear. 2-3 hours is a long time! I would say once or twice a month, or whenever I'm stressed it'll take 3+ hours for me to get to bed

The fan is a good idea, I know that helps me during the summer when I have a fan running.
