Can playing too much hurt your cat??

Boo is 8 months old and he's very active. I'm not sure if this is normal or not, but he plays so hard and so long that he starts panting and if we don't stop him, he'll play until he can't get up anymore.
We stop him whenever we see him panting, but is it ok to just let him play until he drops??
