(I guess I should move this here from the Health & Nutrition area.)
This is Rascal back in 1989 when he was 7 months old. I just had to put him to sleep this morning, at 18 years old.
He's had a lot of health problems in recent years, in his old age. Kidney failure, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Anemia, circulation problems, liver problems which might be cancer or an infection, bladder problems which might be cancer or a bladder stone, ... He's been living on borrowed time for a while now. I've been giving him subcutaneous fluids, prednisone, flagyl, clavamox, procrit shots, renakare, etc. Plus many trips to the vet.
I thought I was going to lose him about a month ago when I had to take him to the vet twice in three days, but the Clavamox (anti-biotic) helped and he rallied a bit.
But then this morning when I woke up, his health had crashed. He was lying on the floor and he couldn't get up. I could tell it was time. I rushed him to the vet, and she agreed. So we put him to sleep.
I got him as a little kitten on June 10, 1989 at a pet store, who said he was 8 weeks old (although the vet I took him to said he was younger than that). In the 18 years he was with me, we lived in an apartment, a rental townhouse, a house with my sister and her husband and their two cats and a dog (for a while), and finally in my current condo. We've had other cat companions, such as Sasha and Ripper. But Rascal has endured it all with me.
I'm gonna miss the little guy.
I'm gonna head to the local humane society soon and adopt a couple more cats. I think Rascal would approve.
Rest In Peace, little guy. Thanks for the wonderful 18 years.
