Russian Blue - eye colour fault

Hi,

I just wondered if there were any Russian Blue breeders out there who could help me.

I purchased a purebred Russian from a registered breeder in June of last year. My kitten, Alexander, was born in April. I have papers for him, and I sighted his parents and their bloodlines. Everything seemed fine. He has all of the characteristics of a Russian Blue (ears, foot pads, coat, etc).

However, he has since developed orange/brown eyes instead of green.

My question is whether, being less than a year old, there is still a chance he will develop green eyes, or whether he will have orange/brown forever (in which case, I won't be able to show him). Is this a common fault, or should I be concerned? Could it be a health issue?

I have contacted the breeder I bought him from, but I suspect she is having a child (she was due around now) and hasn't checked her emails.

Any assistance or advice would be greatly appreciated!

I have no answer for you...however, if you're willing to wait, I will be seeing one of the world's greatest RB breeders (Donna Fuller, Tsar Blue) at the end of February and will ask her then!

PM with the details on who the breeder is and what lines are your kitten out of.

RB kittens will go thru eye color changes early. But by the time they are 8 months old they SHOULD have nice green eye color. Younger RB kittens will have gold/green, but never really gold/brown eye color - they will always have some sort of green. Pet RB kittens may not get really green, but have more of a goldish green shade.

I bred RB's (my first purebreds) so I know the standard. If your kitten has pure gold eye color, something is wrong. The only "non green" eye color is the occasional "ghost RB or white RB" that is a throwback to the siamese in which you have a blue point RB. Those are never used in a breeding program but show up once in awhile.

The other blue cats:

Korats - will have green eye color
British Blues - gold eye color
Chartreux - gold eye color

Are you sure its a RB and not a Chartreux or British? There is a remote chance it could be medical. But if he doesn't have green eyes, you cannot show him in the champion/altered classes - but can show him in the HHP classes if you are interested in showing.

As soon as I get home and dig out his papers, I will message you with them, thanks.

I will also send you a photo of my kitten. There is a touch of green in his eyes, but generally if you look at him, they just look orange.

I am absolutely positive he is a Russian and not a British or other breed (the British, as far as I know, have bigger heads and are a lot more stocky). My mother was a breeder (not of Russians), so I have been around cats for a long time and actively interested in them, and can tell 80-90% of breeds on sight. Although this is the first Russian I have owned, I did the research first to make sure I knew what I was looking for. He is definitely Russian, but the eye colour just worries me. They were a greeny colour initially, and have only changed to orange in the last month or so.

RB's never have orange eye color - if its changed, I think I'd see an eye specialist for the cat. That's not normal if its a true RB.

Yes, this is surely a good advice. Not-so-good eye color may happen, but being worse with time? they get usually better with time.
Besides, if it is bad color it is usually yellowish (like on some photos).

I have a Russian Blue Mix but she looks just like her mother Shadow that is Russian Blue. Her eyes were Gold too and now she is 1.5 Years old. Her eyes are now turning Green. Her name is Sasha. Pure Bred Russian Blues should have Green Eyes.
