We've had our kitties Roscoe and Peaches for about 10 days. We adopted them from the local Humane Society and all was well the first couple days. The third night they were with us, Roscoe started sneezing some. By the fourth night they were both sneezing A LOT so I took them to the vet the next morning. Of course while we were there they never sneezed once. The vet said they had a URI (as I suspected) but that it wasn't that bad and that they just needed some time to get over it. He didn't prescribe any meds but said we could come back in a week if they're not doing any better and he could give them something then.

Well, the sneezing has stopped, but unfortunately it went from sneezing to just a general stuffy nose for both of them. Now tonight they've both started coughing, poor Peaches just had a fit that lasted about 5 minutes where she was coughing ever 10-15 seconds. At first I thought she might have been trying to hack up a hair-ball (I have no idea what that's like, this is my first experience owning cats) but nothing ever came up and I'm pretty sure they're just coughing.

Does this sound like the normal progression for this type of infection? I'm hoping the infection is on the downfall and that they'll be feeling better in the next day or two. It's been a week since the symptoms first began. I understand that this is a virus and that the virus itself can't be treated, however if there's anything that can be done I'd like to do it.

Stimpy had that coughing URI when we brought him home. It sounded awful and (seemed like it) took forever to clear up. He did get over it though. We didn't do antibiotics for it, but he had been on 2 rounds already. Once for a bladder infection, and another round for when he got a URI at the shelter. And his discharge was clear (no green or yellow boogers).

I would give the vet a call and see what they say.
I don't know how old your kitties are, Stimpy was 2 yrs old when we brought him home from the shelter. With the real young ones, those URIs can be so hard on them.
