to all expats living around the world.
We celebrated Australia Day yesterday here in Oz. It was my mum's 91st birthday, my cousins came to lunch & there was much catching up to do.
In the evening, OH & myself & more cousins, went to an Australia Day concert at a Sydney club. The entertainment was excellent.
All in all, I had a wonderful day.

Hooray!! Happy Australia Day everyone!

To the foreigners, Australia Day celebrates the day that Captain Arthur Phillip first landed in Botany Bay, Sydney. It was started as a penal colony as the British jails were overcrowded with the plan to establish a new settlement for those looking for a fresh start.

It's a bit controversial as it's also known as "Invasion Day", as the British Army saw the native Australians - the Aboriginals - saw them as a threat, and killed them. A lot of Aboriginals see that as the anniversary of the day their culture, their race, and their traditions started getting wiped out.

My mum always says she saved Australia. There's talk of changing the date or perhaps having Australia week. I hope they leave things as they are for the time being for my mum's sake as she's so proud to be born on Australia Day.
