Hi - new to these forums... hoping someone has had a similar experience and can help me...

My 2 kittens were neutered this week, the boy is skipping around without a care in the world but the poor female cat is very poorly... She was neutered on Tuesday at lunchtime, came home Tuesday night and was ok, a little drunk but OK. On Wednesday evening I noticed that she'd not moved for about 9/10 hours, hadn't eaten and unresponsive. Called the vets, said it sounded like kidney failure from the anesthetic or surgery. Said she couldn't do bloods that night, but to bring her in first thing Thursday morning. She had a temperature of about 103.6, so they kept her in for the day, gave her anti-biotic injection and something to bring fever down. She responded well, within a few hours she was eating and cleaning herself, she had another injection to keep fever down and came home. Vet doesn't know what's causing it as she said an infection wouldn't kick in that soon. Kitten was fine this morning, then started looking poorly again this afteroon, wasn't moving, not responsive and wouldn't eat tuna. Rang vets, she's back in the vets over night, she's on a drip and has had injection to bring fever down again. Vet thinks her immune system could have had an adverse reaction to the surgery, but not really too sure.

Anyone ever seen this or experienced it. Is it possible she could have pick up something whilst at the vets and it's nothing to do with the surgery - maybe FIP.

Please help, she's such a sweet little kitty.

thanks.

My Meeko just had a fever of over 104 and it came from the Vets. I had taken her for Blood Tests and she caught something. she would not eat or drink either for days but is alot better now. I lost Lucy because I had her fixed and feel bad even though it has been years. She reacted to something and was never the same after being fixed. she kept needing blood transfusions all the time. She also got very infected when she was fixed and was in the Vets for days. Your Cat could have caught something or is seek from being fixed. I hope she will be ok. I used to live in your area and my Sister still lives In San Francisco. Did you use the Pound or a Vet there. My dad used the Pound for his a few years ago and she is fine. Lucy was at a good Vet in San Bruno.

I hope your kitty recovers!! One of my kitties recently had a fever of 105.9 and the poor baby lost a pound in a week and wouldn't move. He's a big fatty, and he wouldn't even eat his once-in-a-while wet food treat. After a shot and a round of antibiotics and going back to the vet 3 days in a row for fluids, he recovered completely (and they never figured out what it was). I hope the same happens to your kitty!!

I lost a kitty last year to FIP. I think it rears its ugly head after the cat gets stressed out! I really hope it isn't FIP though, especially the wet form... I have yet to hear of a kitty on here surviving the wet form! Although there are two cats on here with the dry form of FIP living very nicely!

Also the female spay procedure is alot more complicated than the male nueter! Its major surgery for a female! What are they giving her to lower the fever and for pain?? Metacam perhaps?? That stuff causes damage all on its own to some cats! I had never had one react badly until Eek hurt his paw the other day, he was given Metacam and his Kidneys swelled up!

If you need to talk you can PM me, just click on my name and go down to send private message! Also Hissy is the FIP specialist around here! I wish you nothing but luck, and please keep us posted as we worry if you dont!

thank you all for your lovely messages. the vet called this morning to say her fever had stayed down without any drugs for 24 hours, she had also eaten a little but still wasn't drinking water. He seemed quite pleased and said she was slightly playful too.
I didn't ask the name of the drug they gave her to reduce her temperature, but they said it was an ant-inflamatory. She also had her bloods done last Friday and everything was ok. I didn't ask the vet if it was FIP, but i suspect it would have turned up in bloods. I'll go visit her tomorrow, hopefully she'll still be on the mend. Meanwhile, her brother is so lonely, has no one to play with and seems to enjoy eating me feet instead, quite painful sometimes! Thanks again guys, will let you know how she gets on this week, I feel slightly more at ease now.

I am glad she is better. Meekos Med was a Ketofen Shot for her Fever and Clavamox for the Infection. When will she get to come home? Coco got the Metacam Shot last Nov for her Arthitis then I readi bad stuff about oral metacam. It did say teh Shot is alot safer.

Not sure when she'll get home, it may be early days. I'll hear from the vet again tomorrow morning. Fingers crossed.... as for the weather - i doubt i'll be letting her out of my sight for a while - she'll be indoors and fed on chicken and tuna until i've recovered from the guilt of having done this to her!!
