I was talking to my MIL today and she mentioned getting her cat declawed. I said "Please don't do that." She said "Why, is it mean?" I explained to her when a cat is declawed theirs toes are actually being amputated at the first knuckle. She was horrified, had no idea. Now she is not going to have the cat declawed.
She was saying that her cat was clawing the wood by her bay window and won't use the scratching stuff. The cat a carpet and rope scratching post so I told her to get a cardboard one. I'm just happy I could make somebody aware of how mean declawing is.

These are always great threads to read!! Yah, I'm so glad to hear it.... I've had to turn a few potential adoptors away b/c they wouldn't budge on the issue of needing a declawed cat (I encourage them to find an already declawed kid to adopt... but you get those folks that must have a kitten sadly). But more often then not, I'm happy to say, when they hear what it truly is to declaw a cat, they are happy not to.

I wish that more vets, if they insisted on still offering the surgery in the first place, would give more focus to education prior to, so the owner can make at least an informed desicion.....

Can you also show her how to clip nails and do it weekly? Also recommend she look into the Soft Paws. I'm sure she'd have fun with the different colors.

Thanks for saving the cat's nails

Well done! Nice to hear that another kitty will be keeping his claws.

I mentioned Soft Paws and trimming the claws and she commented "I don't think kitty would tolerate that."
