I finally got the courage today - Luna went in for her annual teeth cleaning - to ask to try something higher protein for Luna. She is currently eating 1/8 cup of Science Diet r/d dry and 1/4 can of r/d wet each morning, than the same portions repeated in the early evening. For months, I've been looking at non prescription high protein and/or low carb foods. Then earlier this month when making a comparison with the r/d and royal canin's version - the calorie control cc - I noticed a significant protein content. Compared to s/d's 31% protein content, the cc has 38% which is up there with a very high quality non prescription food I was looking at Blue Buffalo. Unfortunately the blue buffalo 'weight control' has double the calories of the r/d I was feeding her, so that didn't fit too well with a cat that is still losing wet. She is doing well though - before I started replacing 1/2 of her dry food with wet she was around 13 lbs. Today, a few months later, she weighed in at 10.4 pounds.
So anyway, back to the cc. I haven't started feeding her yet - don't have any $$ yet to buy the bag of dry until next week, but I able to buy some canned food so that she can start transitioning to the cc wet tomorrow morning.
So far I think I made a great decision in persuading the vet to let me try this high protein dry on Luna instead of her r/d which she was gaining weight on when I was feeding her all dry. However, I have concerns about the quality of the wet. I was sneaking in some blue buffalo canned with her r/d wet (which didn't seem to have adverse effects on her weight loss) because I wasn't too impressed with ingredients of the r/d wet (or dry). Then I read the ingredients tonight of the cc wet. Seemed like a lot of by products to me. I'm pretty confident about feeding her cc dry, but I am not sure if I am making a good decision by feeding the cc wet canned with it. On the other hand, I notice they make pouches which have a better ingredient make up. Should I special order the pouches from online or just buy the canned in the prescription section of the store? Keep in mind, no matter what, half her portions will be the dry cc.
