New law that should be made for cat/dog owners. - Page 2

There's nothing wrong with people considering our pets to be ours.
I think this thread http://www.thecatsite.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=155022
shows very well that most of us do. Whether we mentally equate that to inanimate property (ie a car, tv), not likely.

When we say ours, its more like our family, our responsibility yes, but an important part of our family is the point of that thread. Legally, unfortunately, you have to prove ownership of as well as responsible, caring home, just as you do with children.

Before we moved here almost 3 Years ago we called the Pound and the Police on the person across the street. He got a puppy and had it tied up outside in Severe Tstorms and it would bark almost nonstop every day. They taked to him but it hppened again. They should have removed the Dog from him.

It does seem like it would create massive human resource problem to deal with it...tons of personnel, tons of paperwork, etc etc. And if they seize healthy animals from homes that fail to comply, there will be more animals in shelters to be left to die. It's hard enough to find homes for all of them now, imagine if there are twice as many & this new law would make it seem like more of an expensive hassle to keep them.
I totally agree with the people who said that we should strenghten the laws we have now against animal abuse & actually enforce them with more than a slap on the wrist.

The only way to reinforce negligence and abuse of animals is to support and respect the state laws against these crimes. The more they are supported, the closer we come to national laws.
there are no laws that say you have take children to a doctor, for check-ups, or vaccinations, how would they be able to force people to take their pets, as responsible parents we take our children, as responsible pet owners we take our pets.

I will admit to not reading the whole thread so forgive me if this has all been said

Firstly, microchipping is mandatory here but there is no way to enforce it. People get free to a good home kittens all the time so even if shelters, breeders and petstores kept lists they would not get full listings. We get cats in the shelter every day that are obviously owned but we can't trace their owners.

Secondly, not all pets that are not seen by a vet regularly are 'neglected'. My neighbour does not take her 7 year old cat to the vets because it stresses it out too much. It was a basketcase for months after it last went in because she 'didn't seem herself' - they took her when they believed she was sick, she is cared for just as well as mine are. But her owner does not think that the benefits of shots are worth the stress on her cat. Should she be treated like an animal abuser for that decision.

They don't even enforce animal abuse laws, what makes you think they will enforce a law that states you have to take your cat to the vet yearly?
