I'm not sure there is any way to control this. Either they don't mind sharing or they do.

I have 4 cats who share 2 over sized boxes. I had a third box but it was rarely used so I put it away.

Are you having some kind of problem?

IMO you can't make a cat or more then one, use the same box or the one you choose. They decide on their own if its ok. If you have 2 cats, put down 2 litter boxes. If they use one more then the other, or only use the one with no problems, then you can take the other box away.

That's what happened with Charlie and Ling - they both are ok to use the same box (its pretty large - which helps). I had 2 boxes down, and they never used the smaller one, so I just put it on the side

I agree - I don't think there's any way to control this. It's really best to have two boxes for two kitties. But if you put one out, make sure it's large and then scoop a minimum of twice a day. More if you can. If they have a problem sharing, you'll find out pretty quick.

I think it's cleaner if you have one litterbox for each kitty.

Just adding to the chorus here...remember litter boxes are territory. Some kitties just don't want to share. Others don't want to do all their business in one place (this is what happened in my house...they don't mind sharing boxes, but Stan is non-negotiable in his stand on seperate boxes for #1 & #2 )...

Is there a reason you need them to use the same box? Space considerations?

Also welcome to TCS

If you don't want to add a second box you can get a bigger one that what you have now and try that one to start. I have 2 cats and 3 boxes one of which is oversized. (p.s. great UN!)

I would keep two litter boxes if i had the room for them.... I live in a one bedroom apartment so there isnt much room around here. Plus the boyfriend said one has to go.... HAHAH So I prey they will use one box, or i will be in big trouble...
