My wife wanted to see this so I told her that was fine, I trusted her judgment. I knew nothing about the plot. When she told me that it was a sort-of musical, I nearly slammed on the brakes and turned the car around. But I didn't, since our bed is very comfy...and the couch is not.
I expected it to be a waste of 2 hours and $20, but I have to admit that I really liked it. Theoretically I could have done without all the singing, but I recognize that the singing is an important part of the production, so I just accepted it. The acting is first-rate and the film is well-directed --- I felt the pacing was really good; things move along and develop at a nice clip. It comes across as even better than it probably is when you compare it to all of the second-rate garbage that Hollywood has been churning out in recent years.
From a cost perspective, though, I do think that this movie should have been made about 25 years ago, and it should have starred Robert Smith and Siouxsie Sioux. Think of how small the hair and makeup budget would have needed to be.
