My mom's friend is undergoing 18-24hr surgery tomorrow on her back.
She was born with scoliosis and this will be her 4th (hopefully last) surgery.
A few years ago her titanium rods cracked. She didn't heal properly from the last operation. Now she has developed flat back. Her orthopedic surgeon (not who did her operations) suggested a surgeon in St. Louis at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. She flew out this past summer for a consult and was approved for the surgery. She will be out there for at least 2-3 weeks before she can fly again.

I really need some vibes for her. Mom was going to fly out to be with her but she is scheduled for her back surgery the 30th. Her cousin went with her instead cause someone had to fly down with her, stay for the surgery and then fly back home together. She is like a sister to Mom and a 2nd Mom to me.

Thanks.

Being one who also suffers from a chronic back condition, I can sure relate to how she's feeling. I hope everything goes well for her.

Thank you for the vibes/prayers everyone. It's been 10 hours since the surgery began. We haven't received any updates yet.

The surgeon is pumping her body with air to slide his hands in front of her spine to make 3 wedges. Then he has to disconnect the old fusions and replace 1 long rod and 1 short rod. He will have to maneuver her hips around and possibly take some cells. They don't know how much scar tissue there is and how long it will take to disconnect the fusion which is why it may take up to 24hours and possibly longer. He hopes to do it straight through. He really doesn't want to operate again in 2 days but it depends on his fatigue level.

I'm sorry they weren't able to do it al at once. It is a very difficult surgery, but this hospital has an excellent reputation.

My nephew had hip dysplasia surgery there on the 17th. Because he is so old, 20 years old, it was a big deal and only 5 places in the US could do it. He is doing great.

My daughter is facing her first scoliosis surgery as soon as we can fit it in her grad school schedule.

Positive thoughts and prayers for her.

That's great about your nephew. Is he still there recovery?
I hope you can fit your daughter in for surgery. Hopefully it's her first and last one need.

for your family too.

We just received an update. She had 4 rods not 2 like Mom thought. The doctor replaced the lower two that cracked. The upper two are in great shape and muscle is building around the rods. He put in at least 6 new rods today. He just needed to create 3 wedges and he would have finished in record time of 9 hours. With 3.5 hours left her kidneys slowed down and he thought it was too risky to continue. As soon as she got to recovery they started producing urine just fine.

They are trying to rearrange the surgery schedule to get her in on Wednesday. He much prefers a two day wait over a week wait.
They can get her in on Wednesday.

Well that's an improvement, anyway!
I hope things continue to go well for her!

My son has scoliosis in his spine, too, but he refuses to have the surgery. I guess when he saw me after I had my back surgery he got scared and said he would never go through that..
