Suppose you had a choice to maintain your market based plan even while others could have a single-payer insurance that was nationalized? Would you accept that?

We already have Medicare and Medicaid that could be extended to anyone that chose to opt into those plans. This is a viable alternative that could be put into effect if we had the political will.

With the research I've done (not much actually) I've discovered that most countries that have universal health care for their citizens achieved it through labor unions. Of course we no longer have powerful labor unions, so we need to take another route.

I feel strongly for people who do not have health care. Depending on the insurance companies to provide it is never going to work. People go bankrupt just because they are hit by a drunk driver and have health problems afterward. Everyone is very afraid of illness. We have one of the highest infant mortality rates in the industrialized world.
We need to do something that will work for everyone.

You know, I'm just not sure what I would or wouldn't accept when it comes to nationalized healthcare. I do agree that something needs to be done to make healthcare more affordable and accessible to people who can't afford it. It's unacceptable that so many hardworking and deserving people have such difficulty when it comes to getting healthcare or affording to pay for it.

There are things that concern me about the nationalized system, though. There would have to be some sort of levels of coverage or something. I realize that there are some people who are disabled or are unable to work for other reasons---and by no means should be penalized for that . BUT...The people who CAN work and DON'T would have to be addressed. It would not be fair that people who work their butts off would get the same level of healthcare that people who pay NOTHING into the system. I would hope that such a plan would address that.

Another thing that would concern me is this:
Take, for example...me. I am healthy (as far as I know), I exercise, I eat healthy foods, I don't smoke, don't drink to excess, do my wellness exams yearly, I practice stress management, I take care of myself. I do not have to visit the doctor frequently, in part, because of the fact that I take care of myself.
Is it fair that I would pay the same amount into the system as someone who doesn't take care of themselves? (Smoking, drinking to excess, eating a poor diet, zero activity level, and all other unhealthy behaviors...) (I hope not to offend anyone, not condemning them morally--but those are unhealthy behaviors )
* I'm not talking about the people with diseases and conditions that one has no control over--just the lifestyle things that we ALL have control over.*

I wish healthcare for everyone, but we must be careful with how we go about it. I hesitate to embrace the thought of a nationalized system, because it sounds so socialistic and our country has thrived on capitalism for so long. I don't reject the idea----I am just approaching it very cautiously
