Back story, about a month ago we started fostering a 2 month old Siamese kitten who was surrendered because of litter box issues. Took her to the vet as she had diarrhea and was dehydrated, she was put on IV's for two days, wormed and sent home. It has been a month, no worms, her fecal check was clean but she still has random bouts of diarrhea, vet said to feed her dry only but I am worried she could get dehydrated again, she drinks quite well.

I feed Chicken Soup dry and canned to the other cats, has any one had any experience with wet food making diarrhea better or worse? I tried pumpkin, she won't eat it. Any thoughts or ideas are appreciated!

Wet food has been known to cause diarrhea. I would stick to the dry since she drinks plenty of water. You could also cook her some chicken and rice.

Is she eating the chicken soup as well? The food may too rich for her or she could be intolerant of one or more of the proteins or grains . There are 5 different protein sources as well as several different grains and assorted fruit and veggies in the chicken soup. A simpler food might work better with 1 or two protein sources and less grain sources. For wet, look for plain chicken or turkey foods with little to no fish as fish can give some cats diarrhea.

well if she is having issues ... try natural choice or california natural ( the chn and rice )

Slippery elm
Pumpkin/ squash / yams
apple pectin

all are good for diarrea ... has the kitten been wormed three times??

A simple wet like cal natural would be best .... avoid multiple protein sources for now and DEFINATELY multiple grains..

My girl did well on the Natural Choice kitten (regular, not indoor) and she has a sensitive stomach. The indoor contains soy. She had problems with a lot of the natural type foods and would get the runs. She also has food allergies. It's taking her more time to transition to the California Natural Chicken and Brown Rice than it did the Nutro. It doesn't contain and probiotics like the Nutro does so I have started supplementing those and its helping.

thank you from the pro biotic and pre biotic reminder ..

PEAS are a HIGH cat allergen since most premiums have them in the wet or dry or both...

duck is not my first choice for sensitive tummys as it is the richest of the poultry family

My two kittens (6months old) I've been fostering have bouts of diarrhea that range from runny to almost normal.. as far as Nutro natural choice dry food goes in respect to helping diarrhea, is it better to feed them the Indoor formula (white bag) for kittens or the regular one for kittens (the regular one is the one I see in the pink bags that say it is a new 'improved formula' with smaller size kibbles). Right now they are eatting the indoor version.

the soy is a allergen to many ... hence why MOST will use the reg not the indoor

PRO BIOTICS are GOOD bacteria found in the gut ... you can find some supplements like bene bac in most pet stores

Could plain yougurt be helpful as well? Went to All Paws Pet Center today and we are trying Cali Natural Chicken and Brown Rice, I am crossing my paws this will help her. We are seriously considering keeping her, she has really stolen our hearts!

Ingredients
Click on an ingredient to learn more.

Chicken

Chicken is the clean combination of flesh and skin with or without accompanying bone, derived from the parts or whole carcasses of chicken - exclusive of feathers, heads, feet, and entrails.

Chicken is an excellent source of protein.

The chicken Natura uses is not only human-grade, but also tested to be free of hormones, antibiotics and pesticides, as well as chemical preservatives such as BHA, BHT and ethoxyquin. Natura does not add these harmful ingredients, and they are not present in the ingredients we use. This is an important distinction, because manufacturers are not required to list substances that are present in the ingredients when they go into the pet food.
Chicken Meal

Chicken meal is the dry rendered (cooked down) product from a combination of clean flesh and skin with or without accompanying bone, derived from the parts of whole carcasses of chicken -- exclusive of feathers, heads, feet, or entrails.

Chicken meal is considered to be the single best source of protein in commercial pet foods. Natura uses high-quality, low ash chicken meal extensively. This ingredient is very digestible, very palatable, and very expensive.
Brown Rice
Rice

Rice, unless listed as brown rice, is the de-hulled rice kernel, without the bran -- known as white rice.

Rice, in its whole form, is a high quality source of carbohydrates, protein and fiber. This is in contrast to fractionated grain ingredients used by some manufacturers such as rice polishings, rice bran, or brewers rice which have been leeched of much of their nutrient value.

Natura uses whole rice, which is the most easily digested grain and the least likely to cause allergic reactions. It is an antidiarrheal and helps lower cholesterol. Natura also uses brown rice, which is the same plant with the bran intact.
Chicken Fat

Chicken fat is obtained from the tissues of chickens in the commercial process of rendering or extracting.

Chicken fat is the highest of all animal sources in linoleic acid (over 23%), an important element for skin and coat health. Because Natura uses such high-quality chicken, this is a high-quality source of fat.
Natural Flavors

Natural flavors are minimally processed flavor ingredients that do not contain synthetic or artificial components.

In the Natura products that include "natural flavor" in the formula, the exact composition is proprietary. However, it is always made from the same animal species on which the formula is based. For example, the "natural flavor" used in the original EVO formula contains a reduction of chicken meat - much the same process as is employed to create a chicken stock in your home kitchen.
Sunflower Oil

Sunflower oil is obtained by extracting oil from sunflower seeds.

Sunflower oil has a high concentration of linoleic acid (73%), which is important for good skin and coat health. Natura uses sunflower oil that has been cold-pressed and protected from exposure to heat and light. This very high quality, very palatable fat is used in California Natural and Innova formulations.
Flaxseed

Flaxseed is the whole seed of the flax plant.

What makes flaxseed so outstanding is its mix in both soluble and insoluble fiber. Together these fibers aid in digestion and help to prevent constipation, thereby offering protection against cancer. Flaxseed is also an excellent source of Omega 6 and Omega 3 essential fatty acids. These fatty acids help produce the soft, luxuriant coat on your pet for which Natura is known. The richest source of alpha-linoleic acid is found in flaxseed.
Vitamins

Vitamins are organic compounds that function as parts of enzyme systems essential for the transmission of energy and the regulation of metabolisms of the body.

AAFCO regulates minimum standard quantities of vitamins in levels that pets need to survive. All pet food manufacturers supplement their products with vitamins. Beyond meeting these minimum requirements, all Natura products contain a complete vitamin and mineral supplement program that helps pets to thrive, not just survive.

Included in our foods are some of the following vitamins and minerals: Ascorbic Acid, Beta Carotene, Biotin, Calcium Carbonate, Calcium Iodate, Choline Chloride, Cobalt Carbonate, Cobalt Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, d-Calcium Pantothenate, Dicalcium Pantothenate, dl-Methionine, Folic Acid, Iron Proteinate, Manganese Proteinate, Niacin, Potassium Chloride, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Vitamin C Supplement (Sodium Ascorbate), Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin E Supplement (Alpha Tocopherol), Zinc Proteinate

Natura adds these important vitamins and minerals, in proper balance to its foods to ensure that your pet gets all the necessary nutrients for life and good health every day.
Potassium Chloride

A chemical compound, KCl, a colorless or white, cubic, crystalline compound that closely resembles common salt (sodium chloride). It is soluble in water, alcohol, and alkalies.

Potassium plays various roles in metabolism and body functions. It assists in the regulation of the acid-base balance and water balance in the blood and the body tissue. It assists in protein synthesis from amino acids and in carbohydrate metabolism.
Minerals

Minerals are inorganic substances essential for a host of vital processes within the body.

AAFCO regulates minimum standard quantities of minerals in levels that pets need to survive. All pet food manufacturers supplement their products with minerals. Beyond meeting these minimum requirements, all Natura products contain a complete vitamin and mineral supplement program that helps pets to thrive, not just survive. The minerals Natura uses are chelated, providing three to ten times greater assimilation than common minerals.

Taurine

Taurine is the 11th essential amino acid required by cats.

Insufficient levels of taurine can lead to blindness and cardiac problems in cats. Meat is naturally high in taurine, so Natura foods contain high levels of this important nutrient. Natural taurine is also added to our cat foods to ensure cats get enough of this essential amino acid.

Cats vs Dogs: While dogs can synthesize taurine in their systems, cats cannot and must have additional amounts added to their diet for proper health.

Recent university research has suggested, however, that like cats, some breeds of dogs may benefit from Taurine in the diet. While California Natural has always contained ample Taurine from natural sources such as lamb meal, we have decided to supplement Taurine to ensure that all puppies receive full nutritional benefit from our products.
DL-Methionine

Methionine (dL-Methionine) is a sulfur-containing amino acid obtained by the hydrolysis of most common proteins.

Methionine is a principle supplier of sulfur which prevents disorders of the hair (promotes hair growth), skin and nails. It helps lower cholesterol levels by increasing the liver's production of lecithin, reduces liver fat, and protects the kidneys.

dl-methionine is a chelating agent for heavy metals. It regulates the formation of ammonia and creates ammonia-free urine which reduces bladder irritation.

dl-methionine is an essential amino acid which serves as a urinary acidifier.

Natura adds this supplement to cat foods to create acidic urine. In our dog foods, the meat supplies sufficient amounts.
