Mocha's Arthritis

We have a 17-year-old male Himalyan Persian named Mocha wha was recently diagnosed with arthritis (the type was not defined.)

The vet put him on Cosequin but we are unable to give it to him on a daily basis due to the fact that he is a fussy eater and when we put it in his wet food he doesn't always eat it. When he has ingested the Cosequin it causes diarrhea - which we understand should go away once his body adjusts to it. The only problem is we're unable to give it to him on a daily basis as noted previously.

In looking for a possible alternative to Cosequin I've come across two possible products and was wondering if anyone has had any experience with either one.

The first is called HyaFlex (Hyaluronic acid (HA)) available on line. It's a liquid which (here we go again) is added to the cat's food. I couldn't find anything about any side effects - if any.

The second is "Dr. Frank's Joint Pain Relief for Dogs and Cats." It's been advertised on TV and there is a web site also. It's a homeopathic liquid with 9 ingredients which is added to the drinking water (that might be a little easier to have Mocha ingest it.) Again, I have no idea of any side effects.

If anyone can shed some light on these products (or others) that might help Mocha's arthritis I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,

Robert

Are you able to give Mocha pills? I used to pill Willow with the Cosequin because she refused most wet food and I couldn't get it in her any other way.

There are also other glucosamine powders that are flavored differently. I'm currently giving Odo Synovi, which has a beef/liver base. Or, you could try the Zuker's Hip Action treats to see if your cat will eat them. They have glucosamine added. I just bought Odo a heated bed because he was officially diagnosed with arthritis in his back (though I suspected he had it) and he'd been limping. He hasn't quite figured out that the new bed is the best place to sleep, but hopefully he will soon.

Thanks for the suggestions - I'll check them out.

What we do with Mocha is every night when he sits on one of our laps is put a heating pad between a blanket and that seems to help a little.

Cloud_Shade - Did any of the glucosamine products cause diarrhea when you used them?

It's hard to tell--Odo occasionally has runny stools anyway. I haven't noticed a difference since I started the Synovi though.

I'd be interested to hear from someone who has tried or knows someone who has tried "Dr. Frank's Joint Pain Relief" as that would be the easiest to administer to Mocha.

Thanks,

Robert
