OK, so I'm a vet student, I'll be a vet in 4 months, but I still get all shaky and torn up when my babies are sick.

My new kitten that I adopted while on a humane society rotation had been a little lethargic, and was sleeping on the heater vents, so I took her with me to work today just to keep an eye on her, figuring I was just being neurotic.

Well, I took her temp late in the morning during some free time, and it was 104.2. So I let the vet I'm working with know, and she suggested we recheck it, again figuring it was just stress or something and nothing was wrong. Keep in mind Zoey is still eating, playing, purring, she just isn't the insane critter she was a few days ago. On recheck, the temperature was 106.4. So by now I'm starting to freak out... I've only seen a temperature that high in animals who were seizuring or septic, and all of them died. We gave Zoey some fluids under the skin, and checked again... fever was 106.2. I went to lunch, and when I got back the vet was getting ready to give more fluids...

Her temp had been 107!!!

Zoey has had some metacam to reduce her fever and is doing well... but I'd love it if people could send Zoey some get better vibes and also send some Calming mommy vibes my way!!! I'm so glad I have somewhere to vent!

Good wishes for you both - it's always hardest when they're your own.

Sorry you had such a scary day with your sick little kitty. Does the vet have any idea what is causing her temp to be so high? Sending prayers your way for Zoey.

She most likely has a virus of some type that is causing the fever. She has a history of herpesvirus, but its very rare for herpes to cause viremia and fever. So for now the diagnosis is "fever of unknown origin" and we just hope she recovers without any secondary infections. For now there is no indications for antibiotics, so we're waiting on those.

She's currently sleeping on the heat vent, so I know she's still running a fever... she'll probably be fine, but its still worrisome.

Wow they would be giving me meds to calm me down... I would lose it if Squishy had a temp like that.... Hope all is well and Zoey is better.

Zoey is back to her crazy little self again!! I've suddenly realized she needs her nails trimmed, and the jingling of her collar bell has not stopped for quite some time.

Make sure that you do not give her the oral meta cam - it can cause total renal failure! And the shot form should only be given once.
