Hi all, most of you know my situation.
I recently (early December) lost two of my babies to suspected FIP.

I have just started looking for a couple more to adopt and was wondering if any of you had some leads for me!

I live in Napa, CA. Am willing to travel all over the bay area.
I want to ADOPT. But I also would ideally like a bengal, ocicat or egyptian mau breed (for their temperaments as well as their beauty).
I don't want to get them from a breeder only because I believe in adopting whenever possible. There are a lot of purebreds out there without homes too!
I would also like babies, preferably under 6 months and two bonded or littermate kitties.
o! I'd also like to stress that they needn't be PUREbred. just looking for those breeds' traits.

There is a local purebred rescue but they don't have any available right now, they may soon but I was wondering if anyone around here knows of any other places I might look? Maybe someone here has kittens that need homes?

Out of the 3 breeds you mention, your best bet would be a rescue Bengal group. There are VERY few Oci's or Mau's out there that need to be rescued. You'd have to go to a breeder of those - some may have retired breeders/show cats looking for a good home.

Beware of Petfinders and their idea of these breeds. I've checked out a few so called "oci's or mau's" and they are FAR from looking like the breed.

I have 2 sisters but they are plain moggies - they are black & white, born Oct. some time. I am sure that you could find kittens in the hillside counties, though - esp. amador, calaveras, etc. - those areas are in the Dark Ages when it comes to neutering, and the shelters are often a fright as well.... It wouldn't be such a long drive from the Bay area, either, and you would really be helping out some truly desperate kitties!! Sending prayers and vibes for a great success in your search

thanks everyone and yea you're right about petfinder...

I've looked and their idea is sometimes shifty but I've also found some beauties on there as well.
Biggest problem has been that most of them are not nearby me.

I hadn't thought of calaveras county but I might check that out as I have the rest of this week off...

oh! and the only bengal rescue around here is purebred plus and I've already got an application in with them

I got my Kitten from the Bay Area in Nov. She was born Aug 29th. I also got my Russian Blue Mix from the Bay Area a year ago. I can check and see if there are any here in Modesto if it isnt to far for you. I will be going to Santa Rosa,Petaluma and maybe Sonoma tomorrow. This is a place in my area. http://network.bestfriends.org/acg/news/21998.html I can check the East Bay too if you want me too.

no I don't think Modesto is too far...
thanks for the link.

I actually was just berated by some anonymous jerk on craigslist with a "will distruct" message.
I have an ad up really similar to this one after spending HOURS every day for the last week and a half filling out applications, emailing, calling and just generally looking for the right babies to ADOPT (not buy).
he/she left me a nasty message about how LAZY I have to be to put up an ad like that since there are so many kittens that need homes.

some people don't get it. Sure there are a lot of kittens that need homes, am I a bad person because I'd like to choose the kittens I share my home with?

bah, mean stupid person put me in a bad mood. He also flagged my ad and had it removed on a technicality (guess it was in the wrong spot)

I don't think you're a bad person at all.

How can anyone who wants to give an animal a good, happy life be a bad person?

The fact of the matter is, as much as we'd like to, we can't save them all. Not even close. It's completely understandable that you and all other adopters have certain traits and characteristics in mind when choosing a companion. Why wouldn't you? At the risk of sounding cold and clinical, supply greatly exceeds demand. And adoption is for life, which --- fingers crossed --- means many, many years together. It's an investment of time, money and emotions, so of course you'd want to be completely comfortable with all aspects of the process --- from the facility to the cat itself.

There's nothing wrong with being choosy. You don't owe anyone, particularly some anonymous idiot on CL, an apology or an explanation.

By the way, it's nice to read that you're trying your best to move on a little after what happened to Chloe and Berach.

thanks...

honestly I would adopt every kitty I saw if I could! It's awful having to leave them there.
I'm trying to be strict with myself and patient because honestly I can only be an attentive mommy to a few kitties, I've always wanted bengals and if I adopt some other breeds, while I'll still love them to pieces, I'm still gonna want those bengals!

Would you be OK with just the temperament, rather than the look of the breed? Surely there are active, crazy alpha-kittens that look like moggies but think like Bengals--my Baby Girl has to be one of them; she acts like a siamesey, bengalish kitty: High energy, high intelligence, very social, very vocal, totally crazy. You should see her in midair, chasing after a toy; or yelling at me for dinner; or using her quick paws to get in and out of anything... she's a plain little tabby kitty, and she has such a personality it's amazing! With older kittens, the personality should have come out--you want a smart, active kitten who's a little crazy, right? Well, maybe you can find somebody like that, who's just got the personality but not the breed. Meet enough kittens and you're sure to find them eventually.

The people on Craigslist are terrible. My kitten I got in Nov my brother put on Craigslist and got real strange people calling. I said dont worry I am taking her and my Sisters Bf took her brother. My Sister bought a Car today in Petaluma from Craigslist. we got lucky the guy was nice. We went to Santa Rosa after that to my brothers House. I will check some other places out here too and see if i see any of the breeds you want. All my Cats came from the Bay Area. It seems everytime we go to the Bay Area its to get a Pet or we have to do something. Its never for fun.

absolutely, I mean sure, I'd love beautiful snow or marbled bengals but really I want the temperament. I'm very social with my cats, take them out on harnesses, I even take them to coffee with me!
Berach and Chloe were very good on their harnesses and were pretty good when we'd go out but I noticed with Chloe sometimes she was a little timid about being out. more social kitties would tolerate it better or even enjoy it as much as I do, and that's what I'm hoping for...

thank you!

I finally heard back from Purebed Plus Rescue and it sounds as if they've accepted my application, just doesn't sound like they have kitties for me yet.

from what I understand the personalities are much different from that of a russian blue (from the ones I've met)

I talked to one of the fosterers today and she told me that she should have a bengal pair for me soon! about 7 mo's old. I have to talk to another fosterer about them but it's looking good so far.
she told me a little about the kittens and they sound just purrrfect! little growlers, wild things she calls them!

and the adoption fee is only $175 per bengal! holy cow...

I am so THRILLED that you get to meet them today....Please, please, please tell the fosterers to let you take pics!! (and tell them about TCS
)We WANT PICS!

As for your wanting Bengals - well, that's no different than looking for personality matchs on EHarmony or Match.com

I once met a trucker in Lancaster,CA PetSmart who was stocking up on clumping litter for his Bengal. He & his brother have 6 kitties, but only the Bengal goes on the long-distance hauls. He said that the Bengal LOVES it!! And when the man brings out his travel kit, the Bengal will fetch its leash
BTW, I invited the man to share with us at TCS, but he said he doesn't have a computer, that they scare him & he's too old to learn
I hope that he changes his mind!!!
Back to your situation, though - I will check later tonight & see how it went
