Jack has been diagnosed with Feline Herpes Virus. He has had two flare ups in about 10 weeks. The vet said to go ahead and give Lysine every day--which is great because I take it everyday anyway--now he gets one and I get one.

I have been crushing tablets and adding it to wet food (he does not normally eat wet food) but would like to put it in his water.

I've read that 1000mg to 16 oz of water is good. I have a few questions though.

Can I mix up a batch and keep it in the fridge so any time we fill the bowl we can use that water (loves his water cold)?

Would the water need to be used in a certain number of days--another words after 48 hours would the water/lysine no longer be effective?

Thanks so much.

Capsules are easier to mix than tablets. I open a 500 mg capsule and mix it in a little wet food twice a day for April Joy. The trouble with putting it in water is Jack probably won't drink enough to get the full dose. His water should be changed at least daily to prevent bacterial infection. If he will eat wet food that's the easiest way to go. If not, he might like baby food or the juice from a can of chicken or tuna.

He drinks a fair amount of water each day--we keep it fresh and cold (changing it usually two times a day) to encourage drinking.

I sprinkle a little bit of lysine (along with Eagle Pack HS for Zoe's stomach) over a small amount of dry food (small amount to insure that she eats in all in that feeding...dry that has been wetted, doesn't need to sit out long)... and then drizzle just enough water to make it "stick" to the dry and give her that twice a day and free fed dry the rest of the time.
I tried it with water before, the only thing is if you're changing it out as you are, it seems like the lysine is being wasted to me.
Best of luck...I hope the Lysine helps Jack!

Thanks for the ideas.

I'll have to look into the dry food and water drizzle. I did want to get him on more of a schedule when it came to feeding--he is almost 6 months old and is free feeding on dry. I'm keeping him on kitten until at least 9-12 months of age as the vet thinks he is going to be a large kitty (maine coon type) and will continue to grow quite a bit.

My Jordan also has feline herpes. He gets 500 mg daily for maintainance and 1000 mg a day when he looks like hes about to have a flare up. He has only had 2 flare ups in his 4 years, but they were both bad. Jordan is very easy to pill so I just pill him, but I know most cats are difficult to pill. Another option is that vets now sell a paste type form of L-Lysine. I have given that to Jordan, but it is harder to give him that than just pill him. Vets also sell L-Lysine in the powder form. As someone else suggested a great way to hide the L-Lysine is to put it in some meat baby food. Jordan goes crazy for that stuff and all you need is a spoon full of baby food.

He does eat it just fine out of wet food but like I said I'm not really feeding wet right now.

We'll figure something out.

i add lysine to my cats' water. i have 5 cats, 1 w/herpes. i have 2 petmate freshflow fountains - i leave the filters out to prevent the lysine from being 'filtered' out. i use 3 capsules [1500 mg] per 16 ounces of water. i was doing 1000 mg per 16 ounces, but Pixel [the herpes cat] was still showing symptoms, so i increased the dosage. she must be getting enough, since she's doing ok.

Those of you feeding L-Lysine please be careful and read the ingredients label on your bottle. Some pills contain the preservative propylene glycol which is a synthetic solvent they put in anti freeze. I give Charlie Lysine in turkey baby food. That way I know he is getting the right amount (kittens get 250mg-500 mg daily) I feed him on the top of the cat condo because by the time the other cats get wind of this food being offered and climb up, he has already eaten his meds.

My Muddy absolutely loved the stuff until the company changed the formula. He refuses to eat it. It also costs about $8 a tube which lasts 1 week. A jar of powder with shipping costs me about $15 and lasts a year. What would you pick?

I can't remember the name. My vet won't even carry the stuff anymore because cats don't like it.
