Since the old thread is 17 pages long and since it is a brand new year, I thought I would start over with the already delivered kitten list.

Last year there were 568 kittens born to cats of TCS members! That is a LOT of kittens, and that doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of kittens born around the world every year. It's a good reminder to please spay and neuter your kitties! Spaying or neutering even one cat makes such a huge difference.

Anyway, there have been no kittens born yet this year on the board, but I have a pregnant foster cat due very soon and I'm sure there will be lots of others very soon as well. I will keep this thread updated!

Wow - that's frightening! I don't know how many members are on this board, but think of how many MORE kittens are being born across the country from people not on the board!

Am willing to bet that in CFA if you add up all the kittens/litters born to purebreds in 2007, its no where NEAR the amount of mixed/byb's either!

I wouldn't be so sad if all those kittens were getting decent homes; but every day I see the shy little ferals of my neighborhood, and I know it isn't so.

I'd be willing to bet, though, that a fair percentage of the kittens here were from pregnant fosters or strays, though. TCS members tend to do a lot of that sort of thing.

Yes, but it's still because someone didn't spay/neuter.

That is an appalling number of kittens!! Rusty and Dusty are going to be strictly indoor kitties but as soon as they are old enough, they are going to go in for their spay. I am going to start putting the money aside now for it.

I am just glad that the lady I got them from is taking the mama in to be spayed.

We had a litter of 6 kittens from a stray cat born on the 8th. They are really cute! :-) But we are planning on fixing the female in a few months once the kittens go to their new homes.

My 2 kittens were born December 3rd 2007.As soon as they are old enough to be fixed, they will be and they are strictly indoor cats.

The mom cat is in heat now and the woman who owns her was letting her outside again and doesn't even want more kittens. She threatened to drown this litter. She also wants to get rid of the mother.

I was reading the SPCA statistics for 2007 and it was heartbreaking to see how many cats/kittens and even dogs/puppies and other animals they had in and euthanized.I think for 2007 they had over 1000 cats/kittens and 800 + were euthanized.Something like that!

At our shelter last spring and summer we averaged 75 to 100 cats and kittens PER DAY surrendered to the shelter. This is starting about mid-April and finally tapering off in mid-August. Our off season average is 15 to 20 per day.
In 2007 we euthanized 60% of the kittens abandoned at the shelter. This is down substantially from 97% in 2006, and the decrease is due to our volunteers in our Foster Care and PetSmart programs working their butts off.
So figure our shelter alone euthanizes 500+ cats and kittens per week during kitten season and 75 to 100 per week during off season.
I love kittens, as do most of our staff and volunteers. These statistics are heartbreaking. Spaying and neutering is the only responsible thing to do.
