Router question

I have two laptops and I would like the desk out of my living room and into the spare so I was thinking of getting a router - because the cable for the internet is in the living room and I am renting so I have no chance of rewiring the cable. Can routers be wired into the modem without having to be attached to a desktop/computer?

Ethernet cable from the modem to the router, simple as that. However you will need to have ethernet cables from the router to your computers or go with a wireless router.
If you actually care about performance - online gaming or sending stuff over the local network between computers, wireless can be a bit spotty there.

I just need a wireless router for general internet access - I don't do online gaming in terms of MMORPG games, just pogo games.
