Hello!
I have a question regarding litterboxes. I know people say you should either have one box per cat or one box per cat plus one... The thing is I've never had more than one cat using a litterbox. I have only had one "permanent" cat at a time. Sometimes I have foster cats but they are separated from my cat so they don't use the same litter box.

My question is how do you keep the boxes clean!? I have a Littermaid and my cat seems to have a big 'output' so I have to dump the waste receptacle very often (often daily which can get expensive) or it will overflow or clog...
A family member is getting a purebred kitten, and I currently also have a foster rescued kitten I have grown very attached to and am considering keeping... One of the reasons I'm not sure about keeping him is I don't know how to keep up with 3 cats if they all decide to use 1 litterbox! It's hard enough to keep up with the 2 using separate boxes. My resident cat is very picky and if the box is not clean she will use the wood floor nearby instead.
Any tips or suggestions?

I have 4 cats all using the same litterbox
. I was at my wit's end too, because they all wanted to use the litterbox that was in my bathroom, that our eldest (14 years) cat wanted all to herself, plus she wanted a really clean box (and was using the bathroom rugs if it wasn't- arrghh!), and that was not happening with everyone liking the same one. So I broke down and got one of these:

We got a reconditioned one (that was considerably less expensive at $229):

And it came in about a week
. And, I adore this thing!
It just uses regular kitchen trash bags, the dome can be hosed out (literally!) in case someone has an upset tummy and well, you know...
or just kept up with cleaning wipes, and it is clean for every cat, every time (unless one comes in right behind the other one, of course) and I can't smell it (and it sits on half a floor vent) unless it is really, really full
.

It is super easy to use, too, with a button to push to rotate the dome's openings to the top to add litter, and to open the holes to dump the whole box into the tray when it's time for a complete change.

Even my "freaky" cat is using it now (she still sneaks in to watch it turn though, lol).

It was a good bit of $, but, even being a sale shopper, bargain hunter and coupon clipper (hence, the reconditioned unit
), I would spend that money on this all over again! It even has a pretty good warranty (18 months), a money back guarantee (if you or you cat doesn't like it), and I have read that they have great customer service.

Here is their link to help you know if it will work for you:

And no, I don't work for the company!

Here is a link for an automatic litterbox forum, if the LitterRobot isn't what you are looking for:

I do still have a regular covered litterbox on each floor for emergencies (upstairs, mainfloor and basement) just in case, but I keep a thin (one inch, maybe?) layer of litter in them, to keep encouraging mine to use the Robot. Mine like to dig
.

Good luck!

My two kittens are litter-mates and use the same box. So far so good... I work from home so I just scoop periodically. I have read a lot of bad reviews about the litter-maid and a few other brands like it, way more bad then good. I will have to read into this one.

My 3 cats share one litterbox, it's a large 60lt storage container, scooped twice a day. It's large enough that they can all fit in at the same time - which they do quite often

I successfully have 5 boxes for 6 cats, and it went up to 9 cats using them when my fosters were in. I just scoop about 2-4 times a day. I put a garbage bag in a Scoop Away bucket and that is my cat poo dispensor. Then I just throw the bag away every few days. It works so much better then using plastic bags for every scoop I do (I was running out of plastic bags).

Hi,

I was having problems a year ago when I had two cats and one litterbox (they were peeing and pooping in the house because they were telling me it was getting dirty too fast).

So now I have three litter boxes (plain, open, large), all side by side. Two of them have the World's Best Cat Litter, and one has Fresh Step.

I just posted a thread because the floor is a mess! I took a look today and realized that most of the mess is from the Fresh Step, so I'm going to only do WBCL from now on.

Through the help of the people on this board, I just purchased a covered litterbox with a device that helps get the litter off their feet, and a litter mat. I plan to get rid of the Fresh Step litterbox and see how we do with the new one and one old one (two) for a while, because of space and neatness issues.

i also have littermaids... i have 4 for my 5 cats. i line the containers w/4 gallon kitchen garbage bags. then when it's full i just remove the bag, tie shut, & line with a new one. i only have to replace containers when it starts splitting [takes months!]
