Salad question

Tonight John brought me home a Burger King salad. I started eating it and noticed that one of the types of lettuce had darker spots on it. Almost every piece of that type of lettuce had it. I know absolutely nothing about lettuce, so I'm worrying if it's ok. I stuck it in the fridge until I can find an answer. The lettuce isn't wilted and the color isn't brown, it's like darker spots on top of the green. Any ideas? If it's okay, I'll finish eating it but I'm kind of afraid to. And if it's something bad, do you think the few bites that I already ate are going to hurt me?

If it tastes and smells alright and the lettuce didn't reach up and try to fight you, then it is probably ok. Sometimes, if I recall correctly, lettuce can get dark spots from getting too cold.

What type of lettuce and what color are the spots?

It's romaine lettuce I think, at least that's what Burger King's website claims is in the salad. And the spots seem to be a darker green than the rest of the leaf... almost like a dark spinach I'd say.

Could be red leaf lettuce...

As long as it doesn't look like it is decaying, I would think it is fine.

Here's a not so great picture of it (apparently lettuce is hard to photograph, LOL). I may be obsessing about it a bit too much, but would rather not get sick from it!

I wouldn't eat that lettuce. It looks old and not fresh at all.

That is me though, I am very picky about what I eat....too picky maybe

That's what I figured. I'm really picky about what I eat too, obviously. I ate a few bites of the salad before I noticed the leaves like that, and not all of the leaves looked like that... just all of that type. I ate another bite or two of the leaves that looked okay before I put it away and started looking it up. Think I should be prepared to get sick from it? Or do you think a couple bites aren't going to do much damage?

I don't take any chances w/ food, either. I have no desire to get food poisoning.. And you can't be too careful now-a-days when it comes to fast food places.

I would take it back and get a refund...

I'm not so worried about myself anymore. John decided to prove to me it was ok, and he went and finished the salad. And after he had food poisoning over the weekend.

Some lettuce can get spots like that on it when the veins in the leaf are broken. It's not real attractive, but it won't hurt you. As long as it wasn't slimy or brown all over, it should be fine. You KNOW when lettuce is bad! I found a bag in the back corner of my crisper this weekend...thank god the bag was sealed because it was literally soup! (yeah, I gotta pay more attention when I clean out my fridge).
