O.K. 6 years ago my daughter (at age 6 years old at the time) wanted a kitten,(me too..hehe) and by my daugher, it had to be a girl kitten! and daddy finally said o.k.
Friend of ours cat had kittens, 3 of them, 2 long hair and 1 short hair. Daddy said only a short hair. Daughter picked out the short hair anyway and ask if it was a girl...friend & I looked at each other and neither of us could tell or knew how to tell. friend said, well, if it's not a girl just bring it back.
Took the kitten to the vet the next day for check-up and all. Vet (whom I have known for 10 years and are good friends with) ask daughter what she named her new kitty. Daughter said "I named her Abby". Vet lifted up the tail and looked at me, i ask, "well"....vet says "it's a boy". My daughter looked down and you could tell she was disappointed. I told her not to worry that we would discuss it later at home. Went to check out at the front desk and the receptionist (who is vet's wife that we are friends with also) ask daughter same thing "Well, what did you name your new kitty", daughter said "Abby, but it's a boy". Receptionist looked at me and ask if we were going to get the kitten "fixed" and I told her yes. Boy, my daughters face lit up and she looked at me and said "Mommy, if we get Abby "fixed" can we have it be a girl?" receptionist laughed and told my daughter "If you get that kitten "fixed" you can have it be anything you want it to be".
And that was that......we had Abby "fixed" and now at 20 pounds and six years later we just "her".
We still to this day refer to Abby as "her" & "she".

Hee.

I've got an annoying brother-in-law who insists upon calling all fixed male cats/dogs "she" even though he's perfectly aware that they are male. As far as he's concerned, without the "boy parts", they aren't male any more.

That is a great story! My daughter also named our newest kitty Shelby. All of the Shelbys I had ever known or heard of were men. What does it matter? My first name is Gale and I was so mad at my mother for calling me this I started going by my middle name of Lee the rest of my life. Only to find out there were more female Lees than male Lees in the world!

What a cute story. My MIL calls cats "she" and dogs "he" no matter the gender.

And my mother does the exact same thing. No matter how many times I've pointed out that it's biologically impossible for all cats to be female and all dogs to be male. Now I just make fun of her everytime she does it.

My parents both do the same thing... they say it's because cats are more graceful and seem more feminine than the crash and bash dogs.
