They had only two ingredients; usually vanilla ice cream and coke, but sometimes root beer or such. This was such a simple thing, yet where can they be found today? Certainly not in the big city. Maybe in a quaint little town in the sticks with a soda fountain. Anyway, the other night my wife, who is from Iran, and has never heard of or seen a float in her life, decided to put some vanilla ice cream in her coke. I asked her where she learned to do that; that I had not seen such a thing in years. She says she just thought about doing it. I told her how incredibly popular this was fifty years ago and immediately made myself one. Dang! These things sure were good! We have had one every night now for the last four nights.
And to top things off, Persi cleans the ice cream off the inside of the glasses as best he can get his head in.
Now we have three addicts.

I think Dairy Queen and A&W restaurants still make them!!! Plus any ice cream stands stores will make them too.

Rootbeer is the best but you could try cherry, grape or orange soda's too.

A treat from my youth! On occasion, after Sunday evening church services, we'd buy a gallon of A&W root beer straight from the drive-in and a gallon of vanilla ice cream. Then have a great get together with my maternal grandparents (grandpa was the preacher) and aunts and uncles.

Yeah - good times and good tastes. I can even remember getting A&W root beer in genuine frosted glass mugs.

I grew up on root beer floats but my favorite was a black and white thick shake float from Carvel Ice Cream in Yonkers, NY.
I make root beer floats for my son today. Also, if you go to any restaurant that serves root beer and vanilla ice cream, you can ask them to make the float. Family restaurants, that is.

A&W restaurants still make ice cream floats.

I like making my own - chocolate ice cream with cream soda rather then rootbeer. If no cream soda, I will use the rootbeer.

Strange, growing up in Seattle there were A&Ws everywhere. But I never see them here any more than I do Safeway. And DQs are definately on the decline around here, I guess that is why I had all but forgot them.

An ice cream float sounds so good.

Of course I would have a diet root beer with the ice cream to save calories.
