I'm wondering what the suggested % requirement is for cats. The California Natural Chicken and Brown Rice lists .1 Other foods I have fed are closer to .2 or even .3 (Innova).

From the Merck Veterinary Manual:
http://www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/in...2crequirements

Protein suitable for cats must supply >500 mg of taurine/kg diet dry matter. Unless synthetic essential amino acids are added, some animal protein is necessary in the diet to prevent taurine depletion and development of feline central retinal degeneration or dilated cardiomyopathy.

From FelineFuture
http://www.felinefuture.com/nutrition/taurine.php

The National Research Council suggests in its literature a requirement of 400 mg of Taurine/kg of diet for growing kittens and for the maintenance of adult cats, and a minimum of 500 mg of Taurine/kg of diet for reproducing cats. The American Association of Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) outlines in its Nutrient Requirements for Cats a minimum of 0.20% Taurine in the diet for growth, reproduction and adult maintenance.
The Cornell Book of Cats by the Cornell University describes that "The AAFCO Nutrient Profiles for Cat Foods requires that canned foods contain a minimum of 2000 milligrams taurine per kilogram of diet; ..."

From The Abyssinean Homepage
http://www.serve.com/BatonRouge/taurine_chmr.htm

Expanded dry diets containing 1200mg taurine/kg DM and canned diets containing 2500 mg taurine/kg DM would appear to meet the requirements of the majority of cats.

It really does appear pretty ambiguous! I'd be worried about the proper amount to add, if feeding a homemade diet. From the little research I did, it seems wise to err on the side of more....just because deficiencies can cause such significant problems (blindness and dialated cardiomyopathy.)

yeah being an amino acid an OD is unlikely since the body would just well expell the excess

Funny how there are so many varying opinions on what is the right amount.

I just looked at the nutrient analysis and it shows 2933 mg/kg while the guaranteed analysis shows the .1%
