Hi I know it may sound like a strange thread title, but our kitten who is a ginger tabby (5 months) has a normal thin tail as tabbies do.

But recently without licking it or anything he walks around peacefully with this long straight fluffy tail?? it becomes really fluffy like a brush. The rest of his body fur is normal it's just his tail which becomes fluffy. It lasts for 10 mins. He was doing it the other day when he was eating his food and today 15 minutes after he had come back in from the garden.

Does anyone know the meaning or significance of this.

Your help is appreciated.
Thanks

It means he is alarmed or worried. Cat's will fluff their tails to make themselves appear bigger; to ward off potential predators. Has he been neutured? He could be sensing other cats in your area.

Yes my cats get the "brush tail" whenever they are playing with each other and trying to sneak up on one another. It's hillarious because all of a sudden the tail goes straight up into the air and the hair stands straight out! What's even better is when it happens and they are doing the "crab walk." Funny stuff!

Mine do it when they are play-fighting and then the fighting gets a bit real. Or if they are alarmed. Persil's tail gets enormous - I can hardly believe there is that much fur on it!

Hey Guyz.

Thank you very much for your responses.

My kitten hasn't been neutered yet but will be very soon i.e. tommorrow.

So I gather kittens get this brush tail when:

They are playful, Scared/angry from predators, detect another cat in the area.

Thanks
