I'm doing this so I can convince myself that WebTV isn't all that bad - at least not until we get a new computer!

PROS:

1) You don't need to worry about getting a virus, or any other thing that could damage it, like you do w/ a computer.

2) It has only two units to worry about: the WebTV box, and the cordless keyboard - which only costs around $100.00 to replace if both of them fail. A computer has a zillion working parts, and if something goes wrong, you go insane trying to figure it out.
Plus, it costs a heck of a lot more to replace - and money matters when you're a poor person.
Having a cordless keyboard is nice too, b/c you have more mobility. You're "stuck" in one position w/ a computer.

3) I like the search mode a lot better than I do w/ the computer.

4) It's easier to use - especially for an illiterate computer dummy!
A computer is much more detailed, and takes time to figure it out.

5) If it goes kaput, nothing gets lost, b/c everything is actually saved in the main WebTV terminals - wherever they may be. You may lose everything on a computer, unless you have it saved on a disc.

6) You don't have to load any programs, b/c they're already installed. Of course, there's a lot less stuff that you can do too, as opposed to a computer.

CONS:

1) It runs sooooo darn slow!!

2) It is extremely limited as to what you can do.

3) I can't post pics of my furbabies.
Neither can I play in the photo lounge, b/c it takes forever to wait for a page to load.

4) It doesn't have a printer, scanner, or copier.

5) I can't use my Yahoo e-mail account - nor can I get into my Photobucket account, either.

Of course, I say all this now, b/c I don't have a choice in the matter. But y'all will hear me screaming for joy, when we get the new computer
even if you live more than a hundred miles away!

That's all that I can think of for now...

i have web tv too and i agree with all your points. what i hate most is how slow it is. it kind of scares me sometimes when friends tell me all the stuff that goes wrong w/computer. but i hate not beeing able to post pics etc or some of the sites you can't get into. we're thinking of getting a computer after new year.

I don't remember it being all that slow years ago. I mean it is faster than dial-up but slower than DSL. I loved being able to watch tv, surf all while laying in my bed. I miss having such a small light weight keyboard.

While you have webtv are you paying for both internet services?

USE FIREFOX, DO SHOPPING ON LEGIT SITES, DON'T VIEW PRON OR.... JUST GET A MAC

2) It has only two units to worry about: the WebTV box, and the cordless keyboard - which only costs around $100.00 to replace if both of them fail. A computer has a zillion (REALLY...5 OR SO, ALL CAN EASILY BE PURCHASED UNDER $100) working parts, and if something goes wrong, you go insane trying to figure it out.(DEVICE MANAGER)

I'M LAYING ON MY COUCH AS I TYPE ON MY LAPTOP WHILE WATCHING THE BEST 2007 MUSIC VIDEOS FROM MY LAPTOP(THAT CAN GO ANYWHERE W/ ME)... OR I CAN JUST CHANGE THE TV TO IT'S HDMI OUTPUT THAT I HAVE MY DESKTOP COMPUTER W/ A WIRELESS KEYBOARD AND MOUSE
52" OF DESKTOP

3) I like the search mode a lot better than I do w/ the computer.
BETTER THAN GOOGLE???

4) It's easier to use - especially for an illiterate computer dummy!
A computer is much more detailed, and takes time to figure it out.

WELL.... YOU MIGHT BE RIGHT

5) If it goes kaput, nothing gets lost, b/c everything is actually saved in the main WebTV terminals - wherever they may be. You may lose everything on a computer, unless you have it saved on a disc.
SECONDARY HARD DRIVE AND EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE W/ AUTO BACKUPS

6) You don't have to load any programs, b/c they're already installed. Of course, there's a lot less stuff that you can do too, as opposed to a computer.
ENDLESS STUFF THAT YOU CAN'T DO

CONS:

1) It runs sooooo darn slow!!

GET A COMPUTER

2) It is extremely limited as to what you can do.

EVEN MORE REASON TO GET A COMPUTER

3) I can't post pics of my furbabies.
Neither can I play in the photo lounge, b/c it takes forever to wait for a page to load.

GET A COMPUTER

4) It doesn't have a printer, scanner, or copier.
NO CONTEST- GET A COMPUTER

5) I can't use my Yahoo e-mail account - nor can I get into my Photobucket account, either.

PPPPSSSTTT! EVEN W/ A COMPUTER, WHY?

Well KittKatt, it seems to me that if you have no computer but are able to use the internet via the tv even if it is limited, then that cant be bad. And it seems like you are looking at getting a new pc anyway, so what is the point of worrying? Just hang in there till the pc arrives

You still need to be cautious though. WebTV isn't a popular choice, but if it were (like Macs are becoming now) viruses can still be written for their software. Spyware and Adware will infect just about anything and those can be just as hard to remove as a virus...if not harder.

I would just invest in a computer...if security is a concern for you, the protection is already out there for computers (PC or Mac)...if your webTV got infected, there probably is limited protection available to remove whatever it is.

WE HAVE A COMPUTER! IT JUST WENT DOWN! WE PLAN ON GETTING A NEW ONE, IF WE CAN'T GET THIS ONE UP & RUNNING AGAIN!! I'M JUST MAKING COMPARISONS, TO CONVINCE MYSELF THAT WEBTV ISN'T ALL THAT BAD - AT LEAST UNTIL WE GET ANOTHER COMPUTER! IT'S CALLED POSITIVE THINKING!!

Get ready for the learning experience of a lifetime!!

Really, it's not as bad as you think it will be.
You already have some experience from using the WebTV, and that will help steer you in the right direction.
I was hesitant about getting a computer too, but after I got used to it, I was glad to have it.
I thought I would go nuts learning all that stuff too, but it's not as bad as you think. And there are a lot of nice peeps here at TCS that will help walk you through it if you get stuck.
They all helped me when I first got the computer - and I didn't know anything..

Once you have a computer, you don't want to go back..
They're just a pain in the butt, when something goes wrong and you don't know how to fix it..

I'm not worrying (anymore
) and I'm really not complaining. I'm glad that I still at least have something to use for internet access.
I'd really go nuts if I didn't have anything!

It's just my way of convincing myself that something is better than nothing - positive thinking, ya know?

I still need to pay for both services, b/c there isn't a toll-free dial-up number for WebTV in this area.
But I get a discount: it costs $11.95 per month for the WebTV service if you need to also use an ISP - as opposed to $20.00 (if I recall correctly) when you're just using WebTV dial-up.
