I was at the pet store today picking up a few things and took a gander at the cat foods just to see what's out there because I'm thinking of changing Hannah's dry food. (She only eats less than 1/4 C a day so a bag lasts us a long time!) These were 2 I'd heard nothing about and was wondering what everyone thought of them.

1. Pet Promise

This supposedly has no animal byproducts, rendered meat or chicken meals, factory farm meat or chicken, antibiotic fed protein sources, added growth hormones, artificial colors, flavors, preservatives.

Ingredients:
Chicken, brewers rice, corn gluten meal, soy flour, pearled barley, dried egg product, fat naturally preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), brewers dried yeast, oat meal, natural flavor, calcium carbonate, soy protein isolate, phosphoric acid, salt, taurine, vitamins [Vitamin E supplement, niacin, Vitamin A supplement, calcium pantothenate, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin supplement, Vitamin B-12 supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride, folic acid, Vitamin D-3 supplement, biotin, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity)], choline chloride, minerals [zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, manganese sulfate, copper sulfate, calcium iodate, sodium selenite], potassium chloride, calcium phosphate, L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate [source of Vitamin C].

GUARANTEED ANALYSIS:
Crude Protein (Min) 31.0%
Crude Fat (Min) 14.0%
Crude Fiber (Max) 2.5%
Moisture (Max) 12.0%
Ash (Max) 7.0%
Linoleic Acid (Min) 2.3%
Calcium (Ca) (Min) 1.0%
Phosphorus (P) (Min) 0.8%
Selenium (Se) (Min) 0.30 mg/kg
Vitamin E. (Min) 150 IU/kg
Taurine (Min) 0.16%
Ascorbic Acid* (Min) 50 mg/kg

2. Sensible Choice Chicken Meal & Rice (Royal Canin)

Ingredients:
Chicken meal, brewers rice, brown rice, chicken fat, corn gluten meal, rice hulls, beet pulp, natural flavors, sodium bisulfate, potassium chloride, choline chloride, taurine, Vitamins [dl-alpha tocopherol (source of vitamin E), niacin, biotin, riboflavin (vitamin B2), d-calcium pantothenate, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), thiamine mononitrate (vitamin B1), vitamin B12 supplement, vitamin A acetate, vitamin D3 supplement, folic acid], Trace Minerals [zinc oxide, ferrous sulfate, copper sulfate, manganous oxide, sodium selenite, calcium iodate], preserved with mixed tocopherols, rosemary extract and citric acid.

Guaranteed Analysis
Crude Protein (min) 30.00%
Crude Fat (min) 15.00%
Crude Fiber (max) 4.50%
Moisture (max) \t8.50%
Taurine (min.) \t0.17%
Omega 6 (min.) \t3.40%
Omega 3 (min.) \t0.24%

What do you think about these? Hannah's currently eating RC Light 37 which was leftover from my other kitty whose food I had to change to a urinary food.

You didnt ask but I will color code for you

1. Pet Promise

This supposedly has no animal byproducts, rendered meat or chicken meals, factory farm meat or chicken, antibiotic fed protein sources, added growth hormones, artificial colors, flavors, preservatives.

Ingredients:
Chickenthis with a meal is best since meals are meat and some bone dehydrated.. meat is raw when on the label when cooked the amount of meat falls to fifth or sixth ingrediant thus this is GRAIN CITY, brewers ricethis is VERY low quality, corn gluten mealneeded to help the chicken balence out, soy flourHIGH allergen , pearled barleyanother low quality grain, dried egg product, fat naturally preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E)WHOSE FAT .. at least poultry or chicken give s you a clue , brewers dried yeast, oat mealgood grain but so far this is a 3grain to one meat and 2 accessory protein / grains , natural flavor, calcium carbonate, soy protein isolateMORE soy?? this is a bit better quality but , phosphoric acid, salt, taurine, vitamins [Vitamin E supplement, niacin, Vitamin A supplement, calcium pantothenate, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin supplement, Vitamin B-12 supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride, folic acid, Vitamin D-3 supplement, biotin, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity)], choline chloride, minerals [zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, manganese sulfate, copper sulfate, calcium iodate, sodium selenite], potassium chloride, calcium phosphate, L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate [source of Vitamin C].

2. Sensible Choice Chicken Meal & Rice (Royal Canin)

Ingredients:
Chicken meal, brewers ricelow quality, brown rice, chicken fat, corn gluten meal, rice hullsadded for fiber but why??, beet pulp, natural flavors, sodium bisulfatemost food have this but this is TOO high up, potassium chloride, choline chloride, taurine, Vitamins [dl-alpha tocopherol (source of vitamin E), niacin, biotin, riboflavin (vitamin B2), d-calcium pantothenate, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), thiamine mononitrate (vitamin B1), vitamin B12 supplement, vitamin A acetate, vitamin D3 supplement, folic acid], Trace Minerals [zinc oxide, ferrous sulfate, copper sulfate, manganous oxide, sodium selenite, calcium iodate], preserved with mixed tocopherols, rosemary extract and citric acid.

Sensible is better than most RC IMHO but it is low in protein yet the chn meal is the true first ingrediant .. it depends what you need ...

Sharky,

What is the color coding? Is blue = good?

Also, what would be a good, high quality grain? I'm currently treating Osmo to a couple of formula that has brown rice as the only grain. Is brown rice fine?

Thanks for the bits on regular meat vs. meat w/ meals. That's helpful to know that meals are essential.

Colour coding:

I post my thoughts about foods/ingredients, when I use Blue text, that means good or great, I like it a lot ... or the percentage is ideal. When I use Orange to Peach text, this means caution - the ingredient may be fine for some cats but for others it may not be ... I will often use Orange to Peach text for ingrediants that may cause allergies or that the percentage is in the "norm" but not necessarily ideal. For those ingredients I would avoid or that have percentages out of the "norm", I will use Plum text.

I fed Sensible Choice for a year or 2. My cats did pretty well on it. We switched because we were trying "diet" foods for Stimpy. I'm currently feeding Nutro for dry food. (we discovered Stimpy won't eat "diet" foods, so we went a different direction)
