I suppose no news is good news. We talked to the vet earlier and she said there was no change in Humphrey. He's still sleeping while getting the IV fluids. The vet was going to run a few additional tests and call us tonight. We certainly appreciate all your prayers.
Taterbug - I would love it if there was some good explanation as to why this owner abandoned this cat and I can see why you might think perhaps something bad had happened to the owner. Well, that doesn't appear to be the case. I talked to another neighbor today and they told me that they saw her moving out a few weeks ago so unless she's laying dead at her new address (which I doubt), there simply is no excuse for this. Needless to say, my phone calls to her have never been returned and eventhough she moved, her phone number is the same and still has her voicemail message. At this point, I almost hope she doesn't call. We are hoping he will pull through in which case he will be coming to live with us. If he doesn't make it, we will place him next to our sweet Stripey who we lost last Spring. (Eventhough I have little experience w/cats, my husband had the Stripey cat when we got married). It's so ironic, Stripey & Humphrey were "rivals", now it looks like they will be rivals once again.

The "friend" claimed to have been giving the shots to the cat up until the cat disappeared last weekend, however, the vet said the cat hadn't received any shots in a long time. While this woman's judgement was really bad, I felt I had no choice than to tell her where the cat was hospitalized. Today she called me to let me know she was going to have to put him down. The vet told her his kidneys were completely gone and he wouldn't get any better. She and I were both crying but I tried to reassure her that the cat would no longer be in pain and he would have his #1 rival (my dear cat) to help him cross the rainbow bridge. She thanked me for everything we did and for trying to make him comfortable during his last few days. While I still feel her actions were irresponsible, I can't help but hurt for her tonight as I know she is grieving for her dear cat.
