Taterbug - I would love it if there was some good explanation as to why this owner abandoned this cat and I can see why you might think perhaps something bad had happened to the owner. Well, that doesn't appear to be the case. I talked to another neighbor today and they told me that they saw her moving out a few weeks ago so unless she's laying dead at her new address (which I doubt), there simply is no excuse for this. Needless to say, my phone calls to her have never been returned and eventhough she moved, her phone number is the same and still has her voicemail message. At this point, I almost hope she doesn't call. We are hoping he will pull through in which case he will be coming to live with us. If he doesn't make it, we will place him next to our sweet Stripey who we lost last Spring. (Eventhough I have little experience w/cats, my husband had the Stripey cat when we got married). It's so ironic, Stripey & Humphrey were "rivals", now it looks like they will be rivals once again.
That's horrible. Thank goodness he knew to come to you!! Super mega healing that he pulls thru this and has a long loving life with you! Keep your chin up!! TCS vibes can work miracles!!

Update: His owner did in fact call me on yesterday and told me she had just gotten back into town. She told me that she had left the cat in the care of a "friend" who is now renting her house and the friend said that the cat had been missing since last weekend. The "friend" claimed to have been giving the shots to the cat up until the cat disappeared last weekend, however, the vet said the cat hadn't received any shots in a long time. While this woman's judgement was really bad, I felt I had no choice than to tell her where the cat was hospitalized. Today she called me to let me know she was going to have to put him down. The vet told her his kidneys were completely gone and he wouldn't get any better. She and I were both crying but I tried to reassure her that the cat would no longer be in pain and he would have his #1 rival (my dear cat) to help him cross the rainbow bridge. She thanked me for everything we did and for trying to make him comfortable during his last few days. While I still feel her actions were irresponsible, I can't help but hurt for her tonight as I know she is grieving for her dear cat.

Wow!! May I say that your generosity, kindness, and compassion towards both animals and humans is amazing. I am so sorry that Humphrey lost his life, but your actions in trying to save him and your compassion towards his owner are truly commendable and admirable - may we all strive to find the best within ourselves when faced with a terrible situation.

I'm so sorry about that poor fella. But how wonderful that, instead of dying outside and alone and in pain, he had your care and love and the vet to see him through. So even though it's very sad, there's also a little bit of a reason to smile in the midst of it, I think.
