A long time ago I rescued a cat from a parking lot. She was a marbled tortoiseshell, and murred instead of meowed, so I called her Myrtle.

I was going to college, and came home on weekends. My boyfriend looked after her during the week. Sometimes I'd get home before he got in, and the phone would be off the hook. I always told him to just turn the ringer off if he didn't want it to ring. He would tell me that he hadn't done it.

One day my friend called, and someone answered but didn't say anything. She came to visit that weekend and told me about it. She thought that she must have woken up my boyfriend but he didn't want to talk so he just left the phone off the hook. I told her that we were out of town that day, so it couldn't have been him. We thought maybe it was the cat??

So I called my own number and put the phone down so it would ring, to see if the cat would do anything. Myrtle jumped up onto the table, grabbed the cord just below the handset and moved it over until it was just off the hook. We tried it again, and she did the same thing. This was before video was easily accessible, but man I wish I could have caught that on film.

Our old portable phones had a high pitch ring. Every time the one in the office would ring, Charlie would start meowing his head off, stretch up against the desk and bat the phone!
