Google Bookmarks, Del.icio.us, Digg, Facebook, Furl, StumbleUpon and the likes, are all social bookmarking networks (some of them offer more services too). I was wondering how many of our visitors use them, and whether adding a widget that lets you bookmark a page easily to your network be welcome here?

Personally I don't use any of those. In terms of the internet, I'm an "old" fuddy-duddy.

I don't even know what social bookmarking is.

I don't use MySpace or Facebook, btu I do use LinkedIn for professional network contacts.

Me too. I refuse to join Facebook etc, because there really is no point for me. I'm just not into it.
I don't know what the bookmarking means either.
I'm sure there will be a lot of TCS members who would find them useful though.

No, I don't bother with sites like MySpace, Hi5, FaceBook etc.

Too many weirdos hang around in those types of sites and I meet enough of them through general surfing of the net.

The homecare lady who used to come and clean is addicted to that kind of stuff and has been trying to get me into those sites too. It doesn't interest me though.

I think Anne is talking about the social bookmarking part of facebook and other such sites rather than the actual find new friends etc as StumbleUpon, Digg and Del.icio.us are different. They basically act like your bookmarks on your browser but you can log in from any computer and they will also help in searches by finding things that match your preferences.

StumbleUpon is a browser plugin that will 'find' websites based on user recommendations. So you would type cats and it would say x% of users recommended TCS, x% recommeded PetSmart.com etc, you can then rate pages and it will find you other websites based on your preferences.

I don't know what the bookmarking thing is but have a Yahoo 360 page-I don't like the MySpace format or attitude at all.

Thanks for the clarification there, Eithne! Yup, I am only talking about the social bookmarking, i.e. users who like a page, add it to their favorites with some small widget in their browser. Later on, as other members search for something, the most popular votes come at the top.

I am thinking about adding a small module to the article pages, allowing people to quickly add a page to their favorite social bookmarking network. I am not sure if it'll be worth the time and page space, so asking around to see how popular (or in this case, unpopular) they may be.

Now I get it -- I think. It would function as a sort of rating system, right? Bringing the pages we TCS members find most useful to the attention of others? That might be nice.

Yep! It adds a little box beside threads or you have an add-on that just bookmarks the page, you recommend (or give it a thumbs down) the page and on some give keywords and comments and then people searching can see what people thought of the site before clicking.
