something I have noticed but forgot to ask about

I was sitting on the couch and my kitten was laying by me and I was rubbing the bottem of his front paw and I looked at his paw pad and about an inch down there is a kind of nub or whatever, what is that and what is it for? I checked my other cats to make sure it wasn't just him, they all had it and only on their front paws.
