Non-prescription, non-medicinal remedies for Ear Mites?

Hi everyone! A brief introduction for those of you who don't know me: I'm an ex-pat living in China and have two little kittens who I took in off the street. The latest health hurdle is Ear Mites. Medicine for animals is basically unheard of here in China, so...

I was wondering if anyone knew of any non-medicinal remedies for Ear Mites?

I've done some Googling and the best I could come up with was putting Mineral Oil in their ears... apparently this drowns the mites? But my fiancee and I are very concerned with what we're supposed to do next... how does that gooey oil get back OUT of their ears?

So far we've been q-tipping the "coffee grounds" out as fast as we can, but we need some help coming up with a way to help these two critters that doesn't involve Western veterinary medicines that we have no access to.

Any ideas?

This is an website I found on natural ear mites treatments. I can't vouch for any of them, of course.

"The first step in helping your pet is to clean out the ear and try to relieve some of the discomfort. Use an eyedropper or syringe (without the needle) to insert some Vegetable or Olive Oil into the ear canal. While keeping your pets head still (as they will want to immediately shake the substance out) massage the ear thoroughly to loosen any deeply impacted mite dirt (you may be able to gently squeeze some of it up and out of the ear). Use cotton balls to clean the ears and only attempt to use q-tips very carefully being sure not to allow them to enter portions of the deeper ear canal. In order to relieve irritation caused by the mites, use a natural treatment of Psorinum or Sulphur."

I would say use of q-tip is not recommended because it can damage the ear. The website says after you put an oil in you use a cotton ball to get it out.

If you can receive things via US mail service. ( sorry never been to China so I have no idea ) go to www.Petshed.com. ( Australian company) They sell Revolution for cats without a prescription and it is the exact same product sold in the US. Their reputation is excellent.

This is absolutely the simplest, most effective ear mite remedy I have ever come across. One treatment no more earmites.

Maggie and Lola both had ear mites when I got them. One dose of Revolution cleared it up in both cats, and they've never gotten them again. I really would try to find a place that could ship it to you in China. You wouldn't have to worry about drops in the ears, Q-tips, or any other problems!

I agree. If you can find somewhere to purchase Revolution online, that would be your best thing to do, and try the suggestions posted above until it arrives.

All three of our cats have had bouts with mites, and a couple things I found worked well was a basic saline solution dropped into the ears will break up the gunk and makes it much easier to wipe out with a cotton ball. I've then used baby oil on a cotton ball and wiped it around the ear. Keeps it protected, doesn't dry it out and make it scaly, plus it deoderizes... and it works like other oils to smother the mites. Just a few thoughts anyway.

Hi Shad,
Years ago when my cats had mites I was told to mix equal parts white vinegar & water and put that in the ears 2x a day. Just soak a bit up with a cotton ball or paper towel and clean inside the ear with it. It's been years but I believe we only had to do it for 1 or 2 days max.
Good luck!
