Well, I just thought I would take the time and introduce myself. My name is Jackie. I am a new cat owner, I have 4 guinea pigs (which I love to high heaven) and one turtle. I love the pigs the most. They beg squeal for treats and are cuddly in general (when they dont poo or pee on you). My cats name is Smokey. I found out about him from a girl at work. I was thinking about getting a pet that I could sleep with at night because my boyfriend is going to Iraq on Jan 7, 2008. He will be there one year, and I really wanted something to keep my occupied and basically something that just loved me. I was waiting to adopt from the SPCA. I had not even had the chance to go and see the cats. I really was not in a rush. Anyway, a girl at work found out I was considering a cat and she told me about a vet that had a feral cat that was hit by a car, had scabies and soon later (a week after getting him) ear mites. I really did not want a cat with all those problems. So, I said no. But, she then showed me a picture, and my boyfriends mother just put her cat of 13 years to sleep because it had something wrong with the spleen that could not be fixed. I personally loved my boyfriend's mother's cat and when Cathy at work showed his Smokey's picture, he looked just like my boyfriends mother cat that was put to sleep. I instantly said yes. I went and got "butch" (the name the vet named him and instantly renamed him to Smokey. When I first got him, he bonded to me immediately, however he hissed at my boyfriend. He still does. I knew I loved smokey when he decided to sleep on me one night on the couch for about three hours. I just love him. Plain and simple.
As for thew pigs, Spike, whom I have had for 4 years, my boyfriend got him for me as a present. I really did not want a pig. I wanted a ferret. My boyfriend wanted a pig. He came home with Spike, and the first night I had spike, he started to cry immediately. I knew I loved Spike at that moment. At first spike was not well taken care of. I did many things wrong. But when I joined a guinea pig forum, I was quickly out into my place. Those people who did that, saved Spike's life. He was in a small aquarium, on cedar bedding, at the time he got no unlimited hay and he got yogurt drops, no veggies. The things I did wrong were countless. He now is provided the proper care. I assure you, he gets the best care. I have completely changed all of my ways. So, part of my changing was guinea pigs are social animals. Spike was by himself, I had to get him a friend. I then got Junior. Junior and spike got along for awhile, but then there was bloodshed. I then had two pigs that needed a friend. I then got Harry (who was infested with lice from a backyard breeder). Harry was with Junior until, Junior started to fight with harry. Harry then went with Spike. They have been together for a year. Junior still needed a friend. The last boy, Cuddles, the rescue helped me bond him to Junior since Junior is bosey.
The turtle, I got from my mother. She had him in a small tank and he is NOT 4 inches. I took him and researched him. I found out he/she was a red eared slider. also, got a huge tank, a basking area floating rock and live aquatic plants. He is a cool turtle. We call him Mr. Turtle. Thats the story of my life and my farm house in south FL.
