I just brought him home and he's basically acting like nothing even happened. He keeps running off and hiding so he can lick himself, but I'm trying not to let him. Is licking a really big problem, though? He didn't get any stitches.

The vet didn't give me any pain meds for him and she told me not to feed him until tomorrow, because it might upset his tummy. However, with him acting so normal, I have a feeling he'll be hungry later. Is it ok to give him a little canned nutro later and see how he does?

I think he should be fine, I have three females and the vet never told me not to feed them, only not to feed before the op, Good luck, he sounds as though he is doing well.

Licking could irritate the wound, so it's better he doesn't do it. Maybe try to distract him a bit...

You may need to put on an Elizabethan collar to prevent him from licking & irritating the wound.

Cat Nip!! I think cat nip is one of the worlds most perfect cat meds! They like it alot!! The collar might be a good idea too though! (I just think catnip is one of the curealls!)

Jack (4 months) was neutered almost 2 weeks ago and they wanted me to buy the e collar for $20 I refused.

I'm glad I refused as although he did attempt to lick it last the first day home and only happened a few times. Actually by that evening he was over it (he did stay at the vet overnight for his neuter).

He was his normal self--well I guess, I think he's crazier now than before the surgery...God help us...

My vet never even mentioned an e-collar. I've caught Nimbus licking a few times and I made him stop. He seems crazier than usual too! I brought him home a couple hours after the surgery and he didn't even sleep. He just wanted to run around and eat. I actually wish he would have slept, because I had to chase him around for hours to make sure he didn't lick himself.

I dont think thats very good! It says right on the sheet they give you to not let them lick it so I maybe would try the cone or something like that so he doesn't do it! I think they worry about infections by licking it or something, not sure though! Keep us posted!

I think it's normal to lick it a very little bit - I've had four female cats spayed and one male neutered in my time and they all licked a tiny bit, but caused no problems. After all, they've had that area operated on and it smells funny etc and it's natural to want to lick it for them. Just keep and eye and make sure that he doesn't lick too much. I was told that I really needed a collar for Lily after she was spayed two weeks ago and they insisted I take one just in case, but she was OK without it.
